5,819 Comprise PUP Class of 2012

A total of 5,819 students ascended the stage of the World Trade Center in Pasay City on Friday, May 11 and became this year’s official batch of graduates from the main campus of the country’s largest state university, the Office of the University Registrar said.

The multitude included 1 summa cum laude, 53 magna cum laude and 262 cum laude honorees.

PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. de Guzman conferred degrees to nearly 3,000 graduates from 9 colleges at the A. Mabini campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila. They comprised the morning cluster of this year’s commencement exercises which featured a message from lone summa cum laude Floramante Sir John Don King Howard Tandas Ponce III.

The morning cluster was composed of the College of Law with 17 graduates; College of Arts, 361; College of Computer Management and Information Technology, 328; College of Engineering, 423; College of Fine Arts and Architecture, 67; College of Tourism, Hospitality and Transportation Management, 472; College of Languages and Linguistics, 161; College of Communication, 388; College of Cooperatives and Social Development, 134. Another set of more than 3,000 graduates from 7 other colleges and the Open University system represented the afternoon cluster of the day-long ceremonies which included a message from magna cum laude graduate John Paul Ador.

The cluster included the College of Accountancy with 384 graduates; College of Business, 1,575; College of Economics, Finance and Politics, 645; College of Nutrition and Food Science, 177; College of Education, 240; College of Human Kinetics, 78; College of Science, 301; and the Open University System, 85.

House Speaker Feliciano Racimo Belmonte Jr. addressed the first cluster while Rep. Juan Edgardo Manalang Angara spoke before the second cluster. Belmonte and Angara both received the PUP Tanglaw ng Bayan award during the recent year-end commencement exercises.

Other University officials, members of the Board of Regents, deans, directors, chairpersons, and faculty members witnessed the graduation rites.

The graduates had earlier attended a baccalaureate Mass on Wednesday, May 9 at the University Gymnasium in the A. Mabini campus.
