After its success in the Go Green in the City Challenge 2014, the award-winning energy saving device 'Unplug,' or the universal phantom loss unloading gadget, won first runner-up in the recently concluded Ambassador Alfredo Yao Intellectual Property Awards (AMYIPA).
The energy saving gadget, better known in the Department of Electrical Engineering as the technical study on the ‘Design and Development of an Economical Adaptor Called Phantom Load Blocker,’ eliminates the energy consumption of household appliances on stand-by mode.
Unplug has been a continuing study of 2011 alumni Mark Abalos, Aileen Caritero, Christopher Jason Loyola and Allan Mejia, and 5th year students Anthony Amparo, Rommel Areola, Dominik Bas, Marcelo Cruz Jr., Rhomark Lim, Christina Ordoñez, and faculty members Faustino Rural and Kristian Carlo B. Victorio.
Aside from 'Unplug,' another entry from PUP entered the Amyipa finals. The project on the innovation of conventional plugging through electromagnetic induction, or simply the induction plug, is another alumni-student-faculty research from the Electrical Engineering department. The induction plug gadget has been one of the 10 finalists for the Annual Research Awards held last June 2014.
The Amyipa board of judges was composed of Bureau of Patent’s Merito Carag, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industries (PCCI) Chairman Jesus Varela and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Undersecretary Fortunato dela Peña.
