Bachelor of Science in Political Economy (BSPE)

Program Description
The Bachelor of Science in Political Economy is an undergraduate program offered for students whose interest is in the integrated study of economics and politics. The program provides students with strong theoretical foundation and empirical study on the effects and the design of economic policies within the political context which these policies are set and considering the economic forces that interact with the political real.

The program strikes a balance between classroom and research-based activities in understanding the perplexities of politico-economic trends and issues anchored on contemporary economics of politics employing modern technologies.


Admission Requirements

  • Upper 40% of those who pass the PUP College Entrance Test (PUPCET)
  • 82% or better 4th year High School average grade
  • 85% or better 4th year High School average grade in Math and English
  • An interview by the Dean/Department Chairperson

Retention Requirements

Consistent with the CEFP�s commitment to advance and maintain academic excellence in all its academic program, the following provisions serve as general guidelines in determining the qualification of B.S. Economics and B.S. Political Economy majors to advance to higher year levels in the Department of Economics.

  1. On top of the academic delinquency rules of the University, incoming third year students of the Department must:
    1.  Have a weighted average grade of at least 2.50 in:
      • All Economics, Mathematics, Statistics and English subjects required in the first two years of the BSE curriculum;
      • All Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, English and political science subjects required in the first two years of the BSPE Curriculum;
         
    2. Pass the qualifying exam to be administered by the Department, if the student does not meet the minimum average grade requirement stated in item A.1
       
    3. Not have failed or dropped or withdrawn MT 135 (Algebra and Trigonometry) or MT 205 (General Calculus) twice.
       
  2. To advance to fourth year status, any student must:
    1. Not have failed EC 130 (Mathematical Economics) or EC 140 (Economic Statistics) twice;
       
    2. Not have been marked dropped or withdrawn in EC 130 (Mathematical Economics) or EC 140 (Economic Statistics) in two semesters/summer, whether consecutive or not, in which the student enrolled these subjects.

The above provisions shall take effect beginning the first semester of school year 2004-2005 and will be implemented among students who enrolled as freshmen in the Department of Economics beginning the school year 2003-2004. Students who shifted/transferred to the D.E. programs beginning the school year 2003-2004 shall likewise be covered by the above provisions.
