Master of Arts in Language Teaching

General Provisions
If the student has not taken undergraduate courses in a field of specialization, he is required to take eighteen (18) units of qualifying courses to be determined by the Academic Program Chairperson unless otherwise specified in the curriculum;

The student may take more than the prescribed units in any distribution in the curriculum to meet his career objective and professional needs;

Free electives may be chosen from among the courses offered which are outside the required subjects in the student’s curriculum;

If the student has completed courses substantially equivalent to the required courses, he may waive the latter by application to the Dean.


Program Description
The Master of Arts in Language Teaching (MALT) degree is especially designed for English teachers in all levels to upgrade their linguistic and professional competence.


Vision
The Master of Arts in Language Teaching envisions a program for advanced training in the field of language teaching that is steeped in the areas of instruction, research, extension, and production whose vitality depends on the development of strong mentoring relationships between individual students and faculty members.


Mission
To concretize this vision, every attempt shall be made to match students with faculty members according to areas of common interest, expertise, and experience to produce graduates with advanced training in language teaching and research.


Objectives

  • To provide high-level state-of-the-art instruction on language and language teaching
  • To enhance competencies needed for research, extension, and community services
  • To develop leadership qualities for professional careers in language teaching and supervision

  1. Foundation/Core (12 units)
    • ET 600 Fundamentals of Second Language Teaching
    • ET 601 Methods in Teaching English as a Second Language
    • ET 603 Statistics in English as a Second Language
    • RH 600 Methods of Research
  2. Major (18 units)
    • ET 604 Introduction to Language and Linguistics
    • ET 605 Grammatical Foundations
    • ET 606 Discourse Analysis
    • ET 607 E-Aided ESL Methods and Materials: Listening and Speaking
    • ET 608 E-Aided ESL Methods and Materials: Reading and Writing
    • ET 609 Language Testing
  3. Electives/Cognates (6 units)
    • RH 615 Seminar in Thesis Writing
    • Any subject from allied field of specialization
  4. Thesis (6 units)
    • RH 620 Thesis
