Address during the staging of PUP World's Largest Human Rainbow
Luneta Park, Manila (September 18, 2004)
A resounding mabuhay to one and all! On this glorious occasion
marking the staging of the World’s Largest Human Rainbow by the
Polytechnic University of the Philippines, in the celebration of
the PUP Centennial that is none other than our 100 years of
distinguished service to the education and enlightenment of our
people, I greet you all and I share your pride and jubilation for
a vision pursued, a mission accomplished and a commitment to
continue serving our nation to the next one hundred years.
Mahalaga at makabuluhan ang pagtitipon natin sa umagang ito.
Bagay na bagay ang paksang-diwa ng ating sentenaryo: Sandaang Taon
para sa Pilipino. Katatapos ng isang daang taon ng ating
kasarinlan at nagsisimula tayong pumasok sa isang bagong siglo,
isang bagong milenyo. Mapalad tayo sapagkat nasa panahon tayo ng
walang katulad ng kaunlaran sa lahat ng larangan - edukasyon,
teknolohiya, agham, at iba pang nagpapagaan ng mga gawain sa pang
araw-araw na buhay.
Kaya nga, sa pagpasok natin sa panibagong sentenaryo, maraming
tayong dapat ipagpasalamat sa Dakilang Lumikha. At, lalong
maraming tayong dapat gawin upang ihanda ang ating bayan at
mamamayan sa ano mang suliranin at sagabal na maaaring hatid ng
bagong milenyo. Kung baga, nagsisimula tayong muli upang piliting
makaagapay, kundi man makaungos ang ating bayan sa mga kapwa bansa
sa Silangang Asya. At, diyan malaki ang papel na gagampanan ng PUP
at ng lahat ng guro at mag-aaral sa pamantasang ito.
Human Rainbow
Ang pamantasang ito ang tunay na pandayan ng diwa at isip ng
libu-libong kabataang anak ng karaniwang mamamayan, ngunit may
katutubong talino at kakayanan. Higit kailanman, kayo ang aasahan
ng gating bayan sa panahong ito. Kayo ang tulad ng isang maganda
bahaghari - a special kind of rainbow. The world’s largest human
rainbow, sparkling bright and lucent across this part of the
world. Ang inyong sigla at makulay na daigdig ang kailangan natin
upang maukol ang mga ito sa tunay ng mahalaga at tunay na
kapakipakinabang sa ating bayan at pamayanan.
PUP Call to World Peace
Let today’s staging of the World’s Largest Human Rainbow also
provide us with the good opportunity to present a resolution to
the United Nations in committing PUP to the cause of world peace
as mandated by that august world body, of which the Republic of
the Philippines is a founding member.
The PUP resolution recognizes the UN as the foremost instrument
to nurture the spread of knowledge and information, cultural
growth and harmony, social, economic and scientific advancement
among the various countries of the world, under the aegis of
peace.
The PUP resolution cites five imperatives why the academe must
bind itself to the cause of world peace:
First - PUP believes that students of the world can contribute
in achieving lasting peace and goodwill to all men if in their
academic programs they are taught that in this shrinking,
interconnected world of ours, one’s vision must be broad, and
one’s perspective truly global;
Second - PUP encourages students, through a combination of
contemporary and traditional programs, that the world is their
campus where they can study the time-tested tenets of perpetual
learning;
Third - the University asserts that students need to learn why
people see each other differently and that solutions to global
conflicts and disputes may lie in the study of vibrant and rich
cultures of all countries of the world;
Fourth - it appreciates the need for students to be good
citizens of the world, to understand other cultures, to be able to
realize that there is unity in diversity, and to be able to
succeed wherever their journeys take them;
Fifth - PUP affirms that students can help change the world for
the better and that their greatest gift for the next generation is
a world of universal peace.
The PUP resolution also calls on the academe - not only PUP but
the other educational institutions as well - to integrate in the
present educational reform programs the principle of good
citizenship as the surest guarantee to universal peace. The
curriculum is possibly the greatest invention of mankind in the
realm of enlightenment and edification. The PUP resolution to
include good citizenship in the curriculum of the academe
worldwide rests on this vital consideration: to attain world or
universal peace, good citizenship must begin with the individual
citizen. Then family peace will follow and only on that foundation
can the peace of communities, societies, nations, and the world be
realized. Individuals are the basic units of communities, and
communities are the basic units of societies, and societies are
the basic units of nations.
Makabagong Panata
Sa ika-100 anibersaryo ng ating pamantasan, dapat lamang tayong
magbagong panata. Ang mga guro, professors at special lecturers,
isang panibagong panata ng higit na pagbuhos ng talino, lakas at
kakayahan upang ang mga estudyanteng ipinagkatiwala sa ating upang
gabayan tungo sa higit ng mgandang bukas para sa kanila at sa
kanilang mga mahal sa buhay.
Para naman sa ating mga mag-aaral, isang tapat ng pangakong
iukol nila ang kanilang panahon sa pag-aaral at pagtuklas ng
kaalamang maghahatid sa kanila sa rurok ng tagumpay.
Maraming po’ng salamat sa inyong lahat! Mabuhay ang PUP’s
World’s Largest Human Rainbow!
