Here are the policies implemented by the PUP Laboratory High School:


School Policies

Admission Policies

  • No student shall be denied admission into the PUPLHS by reason of age, sex, nationality, religious belief or political affiliation. No transferees, however, shall be accepted at all levels.
  • An applicant who qualified in the Entrance Examination shall submit himself to a psychological test and interview by the Guidance Counselor, senior faculty members, and by the Principal.
  • Every applicant for admission shall undergo a thorough health examination. A student who is found by the PUPLHS physician to be suffering from any contagious disease or deemed to be physically unfit shall not be admitted.
  • A qualified student who fails to enroll and/or submit himself for an interview on the specified dates shall forfeit his right to be admitted.
  • Admission to PUPLHS is granted to qualified applicants with definite understanding that the student and his parents/guardian agree to comply with the Rules and Regulations of the school.

Admission Requirements

  • PUPLHS Entrance Examination Result – within the cut-off score.
  • Psychological Exam and Interview.
  • Form 138 or Elementary Report Card with an average of 82% or higher.
  • Medical Clearance from the PUP Medical Clinic
  • Certified true copy of birth certificate
  • Three (3) pieces latest picture size one inch by one inch (1” x 1”) maroon background
  • Certification of Good Moral Character from the Principal or Guidance Counselor of the school last attended
  • Profile Sheet, ID Information Sheet

Scholarship and Financial Grants

In line with its commitment to democratize access to educational opportunities, the university pursues its program of scholarship and financial aid to qualified students.

  1. Entrance Scholarships
    • Elementary graduates who obtained first honors and second honors shall be given full and partial scholarship, respectively, provided each of them belonged to graduating class of not less than 100 pupils.
    • Students who rank 1 to 5 in the PUPLHS Entrance Examination are given full scholarship
    • Students who rank 6 to 15 in the PUPLHS Entrance Examination are given partial scholarship.
       
  2. Resident Scholarships
    • Students with a final average of at least 90% with no grade below 80% are entitled to full scholarship or full tuition fee discount.
    • Students with a final average of 88% or 89% with no grade below 80% are entitled to partial scholarship or partial tuition fee discount.
       
  3. Service Grant-in-Aids

    3.1  A financial aid in the form of full or partial tuition fee discount given to the following students for rendering their special talents to the service of the University in general and the PUPLHS in particular:

    • Athletes
    • Editors of Buklod Diwa, the official student newspaper of the LHS
    • Members of cultural groups, such as the PUP Band, the Rondalla, and Banda Kawayan

    3.2  The applicant for a service grant-in-aid must:

    • Be a bonafide student of the LHS.
    • Pass the tryouts, auditions, examinations.
    • Editors of Buklod Diwa, the official student newspaper of the LHS
    • Members of cultural groups, such as the PUP Band, the Rondalla and Banda Kawayan
       
  4. Financial Aid to Children of University Employees

    Financial aid equivalent to 50% discount in tuition fee may be given to children of regular faculty members and administrative employees of the University.

Probation

The probationary status of a student is decided upon by the school authorities.

Probation may be either Scholastic or Disciplinary:

  • Scholastic Probation may be either Academic or Technical
  • Disciplinary probation is in Conduct.
  • No student shall be placed under probation for more than one area of deficiency
  • A student on Scholastic Probation who incurs one (1) failure in any of the major subjects shall be denied re-admission
  • The Scholastic Probation status of a student is lifted only upon passing scholastic subjects
  • A student on Disciplinary Probation who incurs a conduct grade lower than 80% in any quarter shall be denied re-admission
  • The Conduct Probation status of a student is lifted only when he maintains a minimum grade of 80% in all quarters.

Conditions that Warrant Probation

  1. Scholastic Probation
    • All first year students taken in without passing the Aptitude Test administered by the Guidance Office
    • Students in the third year and fourth years who received a failing mark (below 75% in any of their subjects, took up and passed summer or remedial classes
  2. Conduct Probation
    • Students who get a conduct grade lower than 80% in any two quarters in a school year.
    • All students with deficiencies like excessive absences, tardiness, cutting classes and/or commission of offenses against school rules and regulations.


Year-end Decisions and Re-admission Policies

At the end of the school year, a year-end deliberation is held by the committee to discuss the status of every student.

  1. Graduating Students
    • Graduated with March - Students are accorded graduation honors by allowing them to march on stage after the completion of the general academic curriculum requirements.
    • Graduated Without March - Students graduate but are denied graduation honors by not allowing to march on stage due to the following reasons:
    • Probationary students who have not met the conditions agreed upon Students who will have to take summer classes
    • Students who refuses to be present at graduation practices and other official school activities prescribed for graduating class.
  2. Undergraduates
    • Promoted In - Students who pass in all his academic subjects satisfactorily and obtain a final conduct average of at least 80%.
    • Promoted Out - Probationary students who fail to meet the conditions agreed upon.
    • Students who fail in any subject
    • Students who commit serious offenses and/or who habitually violate University rules and regulations
    • Those who are habitually absent or whose absences are 10% or more of the total number of school days, unless their absences are due to medical reason; that is supported by the medical certificate of the attending physician.

Academic Policies

  1. Grading System
    • The scholastic performance of a student is indicated by the marks he receives in each subject. A student’s grade is computed at the end of each quarter.
    • The PUPLHS uses the averaging system. Thus, the distribution scheme is:

      Class standing - 70%
      Periodical or Quarterly Test - 30%
      Total - 100%

      The class standing, which is variedly apportioned in the different subject areas, includes quizzes, recitation, homework, projects, term papers, and other requirements of similar nature.
       

    • The final grade per subject is the average of the four grading periods.
    • The passing mark in any given subject is 75% or higher
    • The Ceiling and Cellar grades that will appear on the Report Card will be 100% and 60%, respectively
    • Grade in Conduct is computed by averaging all the grades given by subject teachers per quarter
    • Homeroom is given a descriptive mark
       
  2. Examination
    • Tests are given to diagnose difficulties, to check progress and to measure achievements.
    • At the end of each quarter, an evaluation test in all subject areas is administered to assess the performance status of each student.
    • Examination schedule is given to the student at least one (1) week before the actual dates. It is also reflected on the school calendar posted on the school bulletin boards.
    • All school activities are suspended one (1) week before the quarterly examination so that the students can concentrate on their preparation for the examination
    • Examination permits are pre-requisites specifically during the second quarter
    • For any kind of irregularity in examinations, tests, quizzes and the like, a student will be given a failing mark
    • A student caught cheating during tests, quizzes and the like will be given 60% for that particular examination and 70% in Conduct for the quarter.
    • Violation of examination procedures like talking, possession of textbook/s or note, etc. will merit the appropriate sanctions
    • During Quarterly examination, the student must follow these rules:
      • Observe silence at all times
      • Take the seat assigned to you and do not transfer unless given permission.
      • Keep your desk free of any instructional materials unless required. Make sure your desks are free of any writing that appears to be a “codigo”
      • Always listen to the instructions of your proctor.
      • Raise your hand quietly if you want to call the attention of your proctor for some questions or problems.
      • Refrain from borrowing any materials – calculators, eraser, pencil, etc. during the examinations.
      • Review your answers and remain quiet if you are through.
      • Pass your papers quietly at the instruction of your proctor as soon as the examination time is over and do not stand up in doing so.
      • No special examinations are given to students who fail to take the Quarterly Examination as scheduled.
         
  3. Report Cards
    • The report card is an official document of the school which shows the student’s performance per quarter.
    • Parents are requested to get the cards themselves and must sign and return the report card within three days after receipt. They may also clarify the status of their child with their respective teachers on an appointment basis.
    • School authorities will not be held responsible for future complaints of parents who fail to attend to such important matter.
    • The school’s copy of the Report Card shall be retained by the class adviser duly signed by the parent or guardian.
    • Tampering of the Report Card is a serious offense. Likewise, forging the parent’s or guardian’s signature is also considered a serious offense.
       
  4. Honors and Awards
    • Students who performed well with an average of 88 and do not have a grade lower than 85 in any subject, are awarded with Merit Cards every quarter by the Office of the Principal.
    • Medals and Certificates are awarded to students who have shown exemplary performance in academic and other special skills during the Recognition Program at the end of the year
    • Graduating Honor Students - To qualify for inclusion in the Honor List, a student must:
      • Carry the normal load prescribed for the particular curriculum year.
      • Have not repeated any curriculum year; and
      • Have a general average of at least 85% with no grade below 80% in any subject in the present curriculum year including conduct
         
    • The first two top honor students graduating from High School shall be designated as “Valedictorian” and “Salutatorian.”
    • The next eight top honor students will be cited as “Eight Honorable Mention.”
    • The following criteria are used in the Selection of Academic Honors:

      90% Academic Scholarship
        First Year to Third Year Average Grade:50%
        Fourth Year Average Grade: 50%

      10% Extra/Co-Curricular Activities
       

    • The grades in Conduct from first year to fourth shall be considered in case of tie.
    • Each section in every year level shall have an outstanding student in Conduct who shall be awarded a certificate during Recognition Day Program.
    • Certificate of Recognition is warded to deserving students who excel in a particular subject per year level including Sports, Art, music, Scouting or other areas which the school deems important.
       
  5. Policies on Deportment

    Attendance and Punctuality
     

    • All students are expected to attend classes regularly and punctually.
      When the student is unable to attend class, due to any reason, he must present an excuse letter written by his parents/guardians and noted by the Guidance Counselor or the Principal before he is allowed to attend classes.
    • A student is responsible for all matters taken up in class during his absence.
    • A student is not allowed to leave the school premises during class hours. In case of emergency, a written note or letter from the parents/guardian is needed before they are given permission from the Principal or Guidance Counselor.
    • A student who is absent from class two consecutive weeks or for ten consecutive school days without duly notifying the school authorities shall be dropped from the roll.
    • A student whose absences exceed 20% of the required school days shall be dropped from the roll.
    • Absence due to illness may be excused if the student submits a medical certificate issued by the University Medical Officer or any other physician; provided that, if the latter case, the medical certificate shall be authenticated by the University Medical Office.
    • A student is considered late or tardy if he arrives in class 15 minutes after the scheduled class time.
    • Any student who is absent during the flag ceremony shall secure from the Guidance Office an admission slip, which he will present to the subject teacher concerned. Three times absent in the flag ceremony per quarter will have five (5) points reduction in Conduct.
    • Three incidences of tardiness shall be considered as one absence from class, and 5 - 8 times tardy per quarter will have a reduction of five (5) points in Conduct.
       
  6. External Appearance

    Every student should wear the uniform prescribed by the school at all times.

    • Boys
      • White polo shirt with PUP patch on the left pocket.
      • Plain white undershirt without printing of any sort.
      • Black straight pants of any materials except denims or corduroy
      • Black leather shoes and white socks.
         
    • Girls
      • White blouse with baby collar and with a two-inch band at the hips.
      • Ribbon of the same materials as the skirt.
      • Pin on the left collar.
      • Round pleated skirt in prescribed design and color.
      • Black shoes and white socks.

    Refrain from sporting faddish haircut inappropriate for school. Boys must have a clean manly haircut. Girls must keep their hair properly combed and pinned.
     

  7. Library Card, ID, Registration Card
    • Every student shall wear his school identification card (ID) in entering and while inside the campus.
    • ID/ Library card is presented in entering the library.
    • Registration card is used in making other transactions in the school like, securing permit, clearance, applying for a new ID or Library Card.
    • These privilege cards are non-transferable and should not be tampered or defaced.
    • The loss of any of these cards should be reported immediately to the Guidance Office for proper disciplinary action.
       
  8. Expected Student Behavior
    • Students who are in their classroom before 7:30 should engage themselves in silent study.
    • Each student should attend classes with the necessary materials needed in his class work.
    • A student keeps his school and classroom clean at all times.
    • A student observes proper behavior at all times. He observes silence in the line formation and while passing the corridors.
    • If the teacher is late, the students should wait quietly. When the teacher comes in, they should stand to greet him. But if the teacher is late for 15 minutes, the Principal’s Office should be notified.
    • Students should not interrupt classes in session. They may however, make announcements when the Principal gives them permission to do so.
    • During class or study period, students should refrain from eating, combing hair and having private conversations with his classmates.
    • LHS students are prohibited to from bringing cell phones in school.
    • Students should vacate their classrooms right after their last period and see to it that they did not leave any personal belonging inside their homeroom.
    • Curfew time in campus is 5:30 pm. Students who find it necessary to stay in campus beyond this hour should secure permit from the Principal’s Office, and should have a written consent from their parents that they will be late going home for that particular day.
       
  9. Conduct During Assemblies
    • While waiting for the assembly convocation to begin, students may speak in a low tone of voice to those near them. But they should refrain from shouting, leaving their places unnecessarily, and making conspicuous gestures.
    • When the person of highest rank enters, they should stand to give respect and necessary greetings
    • They should accord the lecturer or speaker due respect or courtesy. The best way to do this is to listen to him attentively. Students must not chat nor do their homework during convocations and assemblies.
    • Students should applaud properly. They should not accompany their applause with “yeah” or “more” or any other remark.
    • Boisterous laughter, whistling, hissing, stamping of feet, side comments are out of place.
    • When the assembly is over, the students should stand when the guest/s and the faculty leave the assembly hall.
       
  10. Serious Offenses

    The school considers certain acts as serious offenses subject to official warning:

    1. Truancy
      • Leaving the campus/classroom without permission during school hours.
      • Cutting classes
      • Gallivanting
      • Leaving the residence in school gear but not reporting to class.
         
    2. Vandalism
      • Writing on walls, tables, chairs, etc.
      • Spoiling or destroying school property.
      • Destroying notices of the school/bulletin boards, displays.
      • Littering on campus

    3. Forgery
      • Tampering with, falsifying or causing the falsification or letters/signatures in the Report Cards and of any official documents like registration cards, Transcript of Records, ID, Certifications and other documents of similar nature or purpose
         
    4. Insubordination to School Authorities
      • Instigating others to insubordination.
      • Provoking incidents harmful to the good name of the school.
      • Propagating false orders.
      • Acts of defiance against teachers and school authorities.
         
    5. Dishonesty, such as cheating during any examination, quiz or test and plagiarism in connection with any academic work.
      • Direct or indirect involvement in examination leakage.
      • Copying from another’s examination papers or allowing another to copy from one’s examination paper.
      • Having somebody else take the examination for him (in which case both shall be liable hereunder)
      • Passing one’s own work any assigned report, term paper, case analysis, reaction paper and the like copies from another.
      • Connivance with other students to changing the answer into correct ones while checking the paper.
         
    6. Verbal Abuse
      • Insulting others.
      • Calling others derogatory names.
      • Swearing (use of absence or propaganda language)
         
    7. Carrying or any deadly weapons, such as firearms, explosives, icepicks, knives and the like within the University premises.
       
    8. Possession or use of prohibited drug.
       
    9. Brawls on campus or at off-campus school functions.
       
    10. Theft or damage to property of the University or of an individual person.
       
    11. Gambling, betting, playing cards even for fun, or similar engagement in any game of chance within the school premises.
       
    12. Smoking, drunkenness or being on school in a state of intoxication.
       
    13. Deliberate disruption of an academic function or school activity which tend to put any member of the faculty, administration or non-teaching staff in ridicule or contempt.
       
    14. Hazing in all organizations.
       
    15. Bribery/extortion.
       
    16. Scandalous display of affection and;
       
    17. Such as other acts unbecoming of a high school student as mat hereinafter be determined by the University authorities.

    The students must be informed in writing of the nature of any accusations against them, and they shall have the right to answer the charges against them.

    All offenses shall be reported to the parents or guardians of the offender through the Guidance Counseling Office or Principal’s Office.

    The evidence must be considered by the investigating committee designated by the school authorities to hear and decide the case.

    Appropriate disciplinary sanctions for non-observance of the University norms shall be provided. Such sanctions shall take the forms of:

    • expulsion
    • suspension
    • probation
    • reprimand
    • warning
    • any other sanction/s as may recommended by the Guidance Counselor to Principal and the LHS Student Disciplinary Board based on the PUP Student Handbook.
  11. Suspension of Classes
    • Classes are suspended in All levels when Typhoon Signal No. 3 is hoisted.
    • Classes are suspendedd when declared by DepEd or CHED through radio or TV
    • When classes are suspended during Examination Days, the test due on the suspended day will be rescheduled on the day they return to school.
       
  12. Co-curricular and Extra-curricular Activities
    • A students who wishes to participate in co-curricular and extra curricular activities must maintain a high academic standing and practice academic discipline.
    • A student who fails in any subject in grading period of the curriculum year may be suspended from activities for the subsequent quarter. However, once their grades in the affected subject have improved, they can rejoin the co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
    • All members are required to be present at meetings called by the activity moderator or adviser. But no activity excuses a student from reporting to a subject teacher, unless the Principal approves the excuse.
    • Students who receive the privilege of representing the school in any activity assume the obligation of living up to the expectations of the school and may be given help by the subject teacher as he return to class if necessary.
       
  13. Outing and Educational Trips
    • Outings and educational trips are encouraged for their educational value, but they will be made at the expense of the students concerned. All groups will be accompanied by some faculty members
    • Overnight trips by any school groups are discouraged except for Scout camping and CAT Quartering
    • These activities when conducted by a class or school group in the name of the school, must approved by the principal at least two weeks before they take place. Permission should be requested in writing, giving full details as to place, date, parental consent, etc.
    • The principal may withdraw the permission when it is conflict with other important activities. No outings are to take place during the review and examination weeks of each grading period.
    • The school is not deemed liable for any untoward incident that may occur beyond the teacher’s control.
       
  14. Students Publications
    • Buklod Diwa is the official student newspaper of the PUPLHS. Its editorial board (Editor-in-chief, Managing editor and three Senior Staff Writers), a Photographer, an Artist, senior and Junior Staffers passed the qualifying.
    • Examinations, interview should be given and they should have met the minimum grade requirements set by the Screening Committee of the school.
    • Junior Memorabilia is the official yearbook of the LHS. Its staff is composed of students who passed the requirements set by the Screening Committee of the school.
