The Institute of Cultural Studies Center for Social History, Center for Humanities and Philosophy, and Center for Creative Works celebrated the 2012 World Philosophy Day on November 27, 2012 at the ICTC Laboratory Phase 2 of the NALLRC, PUP Mabini Campus, Sta. Mesa Manila.
With this year’s theme: "Future Generation", PUP is among the two educational institutions that celebrated the annual event - the other being Ateneo de Manila University. PUP College of Arts and Letters faculty members and students shared their philosophical reflections in papers and theatrical presentations that focused on this year's theme which by and large links to the interests and moral standing of future generations.
This year's celebration reflects the outcome of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20). WPD 2012 celebrates the 15th anniversary of the adoption by UNESCO of the Declaration on the Responsibilities of the Present Generation Towards Future Generations.
In the said celebration, PUP Philosophy students and faculty members served as facilitators and moderators to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Philosophical Association of the Philippines, and Ateneo De Manila University Philosophy Department-sponsored seminar on the philosophical perspectives in teaching "Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao" held at the Leong Hall of ADMU Campus in Quezon City on November 22 and 23, 2012.
The activity focused on the discussion of topics included in ESP modules for K to 12 subjects. It was attended by students and philosophy enthusiasts and instructors from different colleges and universities in the country. Resource speakers presented and simplified Aristotle’s ethics and concept of eudaimonia (happiness and welfare) along with the arête (virtue) and phronesis (practical wisdom); the Lex Naturalis St. Thomas and explanation of Max Scheler's hierarchy of values which are the essentials in the Edukasyon sa Pagpakatao curriculum.
Among the resource speakers were consultants of the DepEd's K to 12 Edukasyon sa Pagpakatao curriculum including University of the Philippines Diliman faculty member Dr. Zosimo Lee (Isip at Kilosloob); ADMU faculty member Dr. Manuel Dy (Ang Dignidad ng Tao); UNESCO Philippine Commissioner and ADMU faculty member Dr. Rainier Ibana (Pagpapasya); Tomas Rosario (Konsiyensiya at Likas na Batas-moral); Lumberto Mendoza (Birtud); ADMU Philosophy Department Chairperson Dr. Agustin Rodriguez (Pagpapahalaga); Geoffrey Guevara (Tungkulin ng Kabataan); and, Rowena Azada - Palacios (Kalayaan).
Invited presenters from the Department of Education (DepEd) include Ms. Sheryll Gayola, Ms. Marivic Leano, Ms. Eugenia Martin, and Ms. Romualdez Comia.
The World Philosophy Day has been celebrated by UNESCO since 2002. Its objective is to encourage people around the world to share their philosophical heritage and to open their minds to new ideas, as well as to inspire a public debate with intellectuals and civil society on the challenges confronting the society.
