The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Laboratory High School (PUPLHS) grabbed the title of the 21st Philippine Travel Mart Eco Chorale Competition High School Division sponsored by Philippine Tour Operators Association in cooperation with the Department of Tourism and the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation, bringing home P 30,000 with free tickets to Enchanted Kingdom, held at SM Megamall Trade Hall (Building B) on September 5, 2010.
With less than three weeks of preparation, the PUPLHS Chorale topped the competition over two prestigious schools (Don Bosco Technical Institute of Makati and Lourdes School of Mandaluyong), singing their contest piece "Salamin ng Langit" which pays tribute to the Pasig River and their choice piece "Kruhay", conducted by Mr. Jonathan A. Jarin, LHS faculty member.
The LHS Chorale faced the battle with 26 angelic voiced delegates, with 16 girls and 10 boys. It was composed of four old members and 22 first-timers.
"We want to give back all the glory to God", said the proud seven-year coach Mr. Jarin, a graduate of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in Music Education from Philippine Normal University and was also a chorale member of the said institution. Last year, Ramon Magsaysay High School (RMHS) topped the event giving another runner-up certificate to PUP. "RMHS was a big challenge to us. So, before the event, as much as possible, I didn't want to know the names of other participating schools so that I won't be pressured or over confident before the fight," he added.
The chorale also participated in the same event in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009 but they ended up first 7th, 3rd and first-runner up, respectively.According to Mr. Jarin, he wanted the chora le to have its first title after having runner up certificates in the past years.
Last year, the chorale also won a Silver B certificate in the International Chorale Festival titled "A Voyage of Song" held in Penang, Malaysia, 4th-8th of July, 2009 which proved that PUPians are not only leading academically but artistically as well.
Next year, Mr. Jarin plans to bring the team and make his tory in Vietnam or Hong Kong to fight for another international title.
