Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ Biology students Mark Louie D. Lopez and Joseph P. Sonio bagged the championship in the 3rd College Research Contest (CRC) sponsored by the Biology Majors Alliance of the Philippines (BMAP) on May 5, 2012 at the Ateneo De Manila University.

Their research paper which garnered the highest score is entitled “Mitotic Inhibition of Sea Urchin (Tripneustesgratilla Lin) Fertilized Egg Using Sulfated Polysaccharide Extracted from Holothuriascabra Jaeger (Class Holothuroidea).” The paper established a baseline data on the possible anti-cancer capability of the common Philippine sea cucumber Holothuriascabra. The students were mentored by Prof. Armin S. Coronado.

This is the second year that the BS Biology thesis students won this award in the same competition.
