Theme: Quality Science Education for All, key to sustainable future
World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) is an annual event celebrated worldwide every November 10 since its establishment by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001. The rationale of celebrating a WSDPD has its roots in the importance of the role of science and scientists for sustainable societies and in the need to inform and involve citizens in science. WSDPD aims to renew the national, as well as the international commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society. The WSDPD also aims at raising public awareness of the importance of science and to bridge the gap between science and societies.
In this sense, a WSDPD would offer an opportunity to show the general public the relevance of science in their lives and to engage them in discussions. Such a venture would also bring a unique perspective to the global search for peace and development. Recent themes have included science for water cooperation (2013), science for global sustainability (2012), towards green societies (2011), science for the rapprochement of peoples and cultures (2010), astronomy (2009) and others. This year, the theme focuses on the promotion of quality science education for all to ensure sustainable future.
Since its inception, World Science Day has also generated concrete projects, programs and funding for science around the world. Several ministries have announced an increase in spending on science, for instance, or the creation of a university or research body. The Day has also helped to foster cooperation between scientists living in regions marred by conflict, one example being the creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO), with UNESCO support.
Every year, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations, scientific research institutions, professional associations, universities, municipalities, the media, science teachers, schools and others are encouraged to participate in the celebration of World Science Day.
In is this context that AGHAM – Advocates of Science and Technology for the People will host this year’s World Science Day Celebration for Peace and Development 2014 in the Philippines. This year’s celebration will be a culmination of a weeklong activities related to science and technology which generally aims to highlight the current state of science education in the Philippines and to unify local scientific communities towards promotion of affordable and quality science education for all Filipinos.
