You may have heard of the mind-body connection, but what about the mouth-body connection? To many people a dental visit is about getting their teeth cleaned, having a tooth pulled, or getting a filling, but it’s not just about teeth, it’s more about your overall health. What goes on in your mouth can affect the rest of the body, likewise, what goes on in your body also can have an effect on your mouth.
Bacteria that builds up on teeth due to poor oral hygiene make gums prone to infection causing inflammation. Once in the bloodstream, bacteria from the mouth can travel to virtually any other site in the body. If you have gum disease or dental caries, the bacteria are constantly getting into the blood causing constant inflammation.

One thing is clear: the body and mouth are not separate. The body can affect the mouth and likewise, the mouth can affect the body. Taking good care of the teeth and gums can really help one live well longer.
