Students from the Department of Biology of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines bagged second place in the #EcoSquadGoals Grant Competition hosted and led by De La Salle University-Manila and SHORE with the theme "#EcoSquadGoals: A Digital Citizen Science Approach to Understand Solid-waste Management" held on January 8, 2021 via Zoom.
PUP was represented by the Society of the Biology students composed of: Rica Mae Valdez, Rove Billete and Joanne Kim Tacleon (Third year Plant Biology students); Mico Samaniego, Raven Elyze Laurella and Trisha Mae Cantillano (Third year Microbiology students); and Lenn Rose Cawaling (Third year Animal Biology student).
The students proposed a project titled “Ang Plastik Mo!: Microplastics from the streets to our streams,” which is a two-day online seminar workshop focusing on microplastics and their harmful effects on both environment and human health.
The online seminar targets Senior High School students across Manila, which involves engaging learning activities with the aim to educate them about the literacy of future scientists and other careers about microplastics and encourage them to explore and take an action about microplastic waste in the Philippines.
#EcoSquadGoals is a program about understanding solid waste management led by the Br. Alfred Shields FSC Marine Station (SHORE) and funded by UNESCO. It aims to give opportunity for university students across Metro Manila to develop solutions regarding reduction of waste products and promote more sustainable alternatives.
The Society of the Biology Students is looking forward to execute the project once the finalization of planning and grant funded by UNESCO are handed to them.
