Selected students from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) attended “Project MoJo” organized by ABS-CBN Happinews held at Robinsons Galleria Cinema 5 last July 11. Multi-awarded journalist and former CNN social media reporter, Yusuf Omar, talked about the rise of mobile journalism and how it is a tool to spread fairer news during the said forum.
Omar explained how anyone could be a journalist through the use of mobile phones, but cautioned the need to maintain fairness, non-partisanship and respect for privacy. With the increasing growth of fake news and disinformation, the social media guru encouraged the participants to do fact-checking on their own instead of waiting for traditional media to do it: "We're all reporters now. But we need journalists to figure out what's real and what isn't," he added.
He also shared apps that helped create his viral videos in #OurStories, a global platform for mobile storytellers, such as Quik, Clips, Video Scribe, and Pick, Play & Post.
The forum was hosted by Gretchen Ho, Jeff Canoy and KaladKaren Davila. Aside from PUP, other participants came from the Eugenio Lopez Jr. Center for Media Arts, Ateneo De Manila University,
Centro Escolar University, Far Eastern University, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Marikina, National College of Science and Technology, San Francisco High School, and STI College.
