The event started with a short program about emergency preparedness and safety management in workplaces. This is to raise and further awareness and keeping everyone prepared for any disaster that may come even in the middle of the pandemic.
Speakers from both the government and private sector shared their insights regarding how to keep working environments safe and what should be done in case of an emergency.
Undersecretary Renato Solidum of the Department of Science and Technology-PHIVOLCS began by explaining how earthquakes occur, their causes, and their aftermath. USec Solidum also shared that to have a safe working environment. According to him, it is necessary to conduct tests including identifying safe and dangerous zones in order to have effective plans and solutions that can be used during a disaster, to thoroughly understand the risks, impacts, and losses that can possibly be a result after a disaster.
In addition to being prepared and having effective plans, Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) Director Veronica Cabaldon suggested other ways to further expand knowledge about disaster preparedness and introduced two sites/applications that can help with disaster recovery.
• iADAPT, an eLearning solution that aims to equip Filipinos with the right set of tools, skills, and resources they need to be confidently ready to face any type of disaster.
• SIKAP (Synergizing Recovery Initiatives, Knowledge, and Adaptation Practices), a unified online business recovery hub that will help micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) bounce forward to the “next normal.”
Meanwhile, Department of Labor and Employment Assistant Secretary Ma. Teresita Cucueco added that more attention should be given not only to the awareness and readiness of workers but also to the implementation of safety guidelines in the working environment itself.
Afterward, at exactly 9:00 am, the online ceremonial pressing of the button was conducted which signaled the participants to do the “Duck, Cover, and Hold.”
