As the Philippines deals with the impact of the consecutive typhoons that battered the country in the past weeks, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) National Service Training Program (NSTP), in collaboration with PUP Sandiwa, conducted a webinar on disaster resilience with the theme, “From Risk to Resilience: Strengthening the Role of Youth in Climate and Disaster Resilience,” via Zoom Teleconference simulcast to Facebook Live last December 6.
The forum has two parts: “Basic Concepts of Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Climate Change Adaptation” and “Enhancing Disaster Resilience through Youth Empowerment,” which were discussed respectively by PUP Lecturer, Executive Producer and Director of DepED TV and a Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Advocate, George Vincent Gamayo, and the founder of Earth Shaker, Mr. Ralph Lauren Abainza.
In his talk, Abainza emphasized the importance of engaging the youth in environmental issues stating that the youth must be educated about the future and encouraged them to educate people as well.
“Wisdom does not only come from the authorities nor age. As early as now, we should educate the youth about what might happen in the future. And for the youth, always strive to communicate dahil hindi naman lahat ay hindi nakikinig. May mga taong handang handa na makinig. Hindi niyo kasalanan na may mali sa sistema ngunit kung nakita niyo na ang problema at nanatili iyon, kasalanan mo na dahil hindi ka nagsalita at wala kang ginawa,” he said.
On Gamayo's discussion, meanwhile, he clarified the misuse of the term "natural disasters" and he implied that it is wrong and rather, it should be called natural hazards.
"I would say no, a resounding no. Hindi po tama na gamitin natin ang konseptong [ang salitang] jargon na “natural disaster” dahil ang natural disaster ay nangyayari kapag nagkaroon tayo ng hindi paghahanda, ng kapabayaan, at ikatlo, kung hindi tayo aware sa kung ano ang mangyayari sa atin. So hindi po totoo ang natural disaster, natural hazards po ang meron," he stated.
The webinar will be replayed at the PUP NSTP official Facebook on December 13 and 20, 2020.
