Collaborations with fellow academic institutions open opportunities for broader streams of learning. On October 26, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) as spearheaded by the College of Science (CS), forged a partnership with the University of the Philippines – Los Banos (UPLB) Musuem of Natural History (MNH) at the Executive Conference Room, BM Gonzalez Hall of UPLB. This was formalized through a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signed by the heads of each institution, PUP President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi and UPLB Chancellor Dr. Jose V. Camacho.
“Our young science researchers, particularly in the field of Biology, would immensely benefit from this partnership. We look forward to this agreement with UPLB’s Museum of Natural History. We also hope to learn from this engagement and in the future, eventually build our own here at Sintang Paaralan. These kinds of initiatives should be lauded and sustained, and I congratulate our College of Science for working on this,” Dr. Muhi shared in an email interview.
Present during the signing of the agreement were PUP College of Science Dean, Dr. Lincoln A. Bautista and Dr. Armin P. Coronado, Director of the Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST). UPLB Chancellor Camacho personally signed the agreement, together with MNH Director, Ms. Marian P. De Leon.
In her closing remarks, MNH Director De Leon shared that “The University of the Philippines Los Baños and us, at the museum are looking forward to the activities and initiatives we can forward as partners. After all, UPLB as a national university is here for public service initiatives and we are glad to have you with us as partners in contributing to the country’s national development.”
The partnership specifically outlines engagements in developing the science and technology consciousness for each institution, anchored on the esteemed Museum of Natural History. The said museum, established since 1976, serves as a center of documentation as well as a repository of biological specimens for scientific reference, and a center of research, information, and education. It has also since been developed into a center of education on the preservation of natural heritage and a facility for training future naturalists. PUP-CS and UPLB-MNH are also looking into potential collaboration and capacity-building activities in line with each institution’s mission, goals, and development plans.
Part of the agreement is an internship program for eighteen (18) Biology students from PUP, four (4) of which would be focusing on plants, while 14 are on the microbiology track. MNH will host them through online conferencing and customized technical training.
