Social research was given the spotlight during “Palihan sa Panlipunang Pananaliksik para sa Organisasyong Pangmasa”, a research workshop led by the Center for Labor Research and Publications (CLRP), and the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations (ILIR), in cooperation with the Crispin B. Beltran Resource Center (CBBRC) held on July 20 at the Accenture Hall of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines Main Campus.
The workshop was created with a goal to bring the culture of research to non-academic sectors particularly to the mass organizations. PUP ILIR’s Palihan is the first of its kind to offer free instructions on how to further improve one’s research skills especially in the field of labor studies. Researchers and mass organizers from different sectors gathered to participate in this one-day activity. Representatives from Gabriela Youth, Migrante, Kalipunan ng Damayang Mahihirap (Kadamay), Urban Poor Resource Center of the Philippines (UPRCP), Defend Job Philippines and NXP Semiconductors Company Workers Union (NXP-SCWU) were among the attendees.
The program ran for a day, half of which was focused on discussions about the basic concepts of social research and the other half was spent on putting the participant’s learnings into prospective research ideas. The first part of the workshop was a mini lecture headed by ILIR’s Dir. Rimando E. Felicia, and Prof. Jessica Viliran of the PUP Department of Sociology.
In the afternoon, attendees participated in a workshop in which they were able to foster potential research subjects. Panelists who guided their work and shared research experience are Dir. Rimando E. Felicia and his co-speaker for the day, Prof. Jessica Viliran alongside Ms. Melona Daclan from Defend Job Philippines and Ms. Rochelle Porras of the Ecumenical Institute for Labor Education and Research.
