A research team from the University’s College of Science won second place in this year’s FNRI-DOST Undergraduate Research Competition held on July 2-3, 2019 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City. This year’s win caps the nine-year drought of the Sintang Paaralan as it once again placed in this prestigious research competition. University of Santo Tomas (UST) bagged the first place, while Philippine Women’s University (PWU) took home the third place.
The winning research from PUP is titled: “Assessment of Nutrition Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices (KHP) of a State University’s Student-Athletes: Basis for the Development of Nutrition Education Program. Researchers include Jedmark S. Gapit (principal and presenting author), Miguel Gaston M. Agcaoili, Ronamae C. Delos Santos, Catherine Kaye B. Erestain, and Archie Kaye D. Flores. Associate Professor Iris Rowena A. Bernardo served as the team’s research adviser, and Associate Professor Carmela V. Dellova helped as competition adviser.
While there is a growing interest for sports nutrition research, there remains paucity of country-specific approaches and as such, the paper envisions itself as a springboard for future sports nutrition research initiatives in the Philippines. It also aims to be a catalyst for the development of intensive nutrition education program in the country, as well as a platform to assess the KHP profile of student-athletes in the university.
The research competition is held annually under the support of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI). It is open to colleges and universities offering specializations on Nutrition and Dietetics, and Food Technology.
