Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) – College of Education (CoEd) held a Convocation Ceremony to commemorate National Teachers’ Month with a prominent guest speaker, Atty. Chel Diokno. The convocation was held through ZOOM Meeting and broadcast live at the BEST Society Facebook page, last October 2. Student Organizations under CoEd collaborated to carry out the event with the theme, “Gurong Filipino para sa Batang Filipino.”
“… I asked the indulgence of the audience to extend the theme to be attuned with the new normal because I believe, and I hope that you will also agree that the Filipino teacher is not just for the Filipino youth,” Dr. Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, College Dean, said in her opening remarks.
She emphasized that Filipino teachers are teachers for every child on earth who is willing to learn, regardless of the differences and circumstances the world is encountering.
According to Alyza Jane Caddauan, the event’s host and Co-chairperson of the event, PUP – CoEd annually celebrates Teachers’ Month with various activities like competitions, programs, and Flash Mob, making this Convocation Ceremony extra special for this is the first-ever virtual celebration of the occasion.
The program was then followed by the fruitful talk of Atty. Jose Manuel “Chel” Diokno about the youth and education in the country.
“Ako mismo sa pagtuturo ko ngayon sa ilalim nitong pandemya, nakikita ko talaga na ang hirap ng adjustment hindi lang para sa mga estudyante kundi pati na rin sa guro,” Atty. Chel, who is also the Founding Dean of the College of Law at De La Salle University, stated.
He added that people should look objectively at the situation of education in the country, given that all are suffering under the grip of COVID-19.
“I thoroughly enjoy the talk, it was a great lecture. Atty. Chel Diokno is such a wonderful speaker and person,” Miguel Condiman, a BSEDEN 1-1D student, said.
In addition, he said that despite the program being held virtually, the organizers exerted much time and effort to make it possible.
The Convocation ceremony ended with the presentation of winners in various contests and a multimedia presentation as a tribute to the hardwork of teachers amid the crisis. ###
