The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, through its University Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (UDRRMC) and Disaster Resilience Institute (DRI), signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) at the PUP Main Campus in Sta. Mesa, Manila on April 17, 2023.
“We are happy that we are finally partners with PHIVOLCS because our leadership is committed to becoming a disaster resilient Sintang Paaralan. We look forward to gaining firsthand knowledge and enhancements to our disaster risk reduction management programs, as well as our climate change adaptation initiatives. Hopefully, the whole community really takes advantage of this opportunity,” University President Manual M. Muhi shared in an email, when asked about the value of this partnership.
Under the formal agreement, DOST – PHIVOLCS will train PUP with the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS). This is particularly helpful in improving the university’s preparedness and resilience not only for The Big One, but equally for other types of risks.
Dr. Muhi led the Sintang Paaralan in the MOA signing, along with Executive Vice President Alberto C. Guillo. Prof. Guillo also serves as the Chair of the University Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (UDRRMC). Disaster Resilience Institute Director Erickson D. Calata was also present in the event. Other officials of the University from the Office of Student Services, National Service Training Program, Institute of Continuing Professional Development, Information and Communication Technology Office, and Physical Planning and Development Office were also present during the MOA signing.
Director Teresito C. Bacolcol and REDAS Program Coordinator and Associate Scientist Maria Leonila P. Bautista signed the MOA for DOST- PHILVOLCS. REDAS Project Staff were also present during the MOA signing activity.
