Louie Montemar, Research and Extension, Communication Management Office
Dubbing PUP as a “sleeping dragon” given its potential for research and extension, Dr. Custer C. Diocaris spoke before a large crowd of extensionists and faculty members who participated in the Extension Capability Building Seminar sponsored by the PUP Extension Management Office (EMO) held last May 16, 2019 at the Bulwagang Bonifacio, Mabini Campus.
Dr. Diocaris, Chief of the Research Management Division of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) in 2013, encouraged participants to integrate their extension work with their research as he believes this can help bolster the University’s research productivity. The CHED official began his talk by clarifying that the line “Knowledge is power” must be understood in the context of using knowledge for community needs as it was first posited during the Age of Enlightenment. From this, he highlighted extension as an integrative element of a university’s mission.
Meanwhile, Dr. Marlowe U. Aquino of Don Mariano Marcos University walked through key principles of extension and shared on his experiences in extension work during the afternoon session. One of his key propositions is that extensionists should primarily be development workers.
The seminar was designed to capacitate and equip the University’s extension officers, a large number of which have recently been appointed.
