PUP Biology students Ma. Melanie Dalaine Carnaje, Judy Anne Galiza, and Mico Samaniego were among the 785 qualifiers of Department of Science and Technology, – Science Education Institute Junior Level Science Scholarships 2020-2021 (DOST-SEI JLSS).
The DOST-SEI JLSS benefits include tuition subsidy, monthly stipend, book, and transportation allowance. “The DOST scholarship will enormously help my family to ease from financial problems. Academic-wise, it will help me in my studies as I really need funds to cope with online studies and ongoing thesis,” Carnaje said.
Carnaje is also among the awardees of a one-time scholarship grant from the Microbiology Consortium last June. “I cannot believe that I can finally see myself as a DOST scholar. I feel really blessed. I cannot believe these overflowing blessings, hence, thank you so much, God!” she added.
Galiza expressed her gratitude for being one of the qualifiers of the scholarship. “JLSS scholarship is a big help, it opens an opportunity to financially unstable students, kagaya ‘ko, walang permanent job parents ko, at nasa Manila ako ngayon. I am very happy and grateful kasi sa daming nagapply, isa ako sa napili,” she said.
For Samaniego the scholarship’s aid extends beyond the undergraduate course, “this will be a stepping stone for me to have a grasp of my ultimate dream which is to enter medical school and become a doctor.”
Samaniego encourages incoming junior students to apply for the scholarship for “it will really help you have a driving force to meet your goals in the STEM field.”
“Please engrave in our hearts and minds that we should return the service to the nation. This financial aid came from the taxes of our own people and we should reciprocate it by serving them,” Samaniego added.
Carnaje urged aspiring scholars to not lose hope in applying for scholarships. “If it’s meant to happen, it will, at the right time for the right reasons. However, it is important to remember that it should combine with hard work and tenacity so that you could have a higher chance of earning fruits from your labor,” she said.
The DOST-SEI strayed from the traditional national qualifying exam due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The applicants were screened through the JLSS E-Scholarship Application System. The qualifiers were determined using data analytics based on the documents submitted, and their general weighted average for the first two years of college.
The virtual orientation for the qualifiers will be held sometime in August 2021.
