Journalism students bagged the championship in the recent #InfoDataQuest: Data Storytelling Competition Group Category organized by the Freedom of Information-Project Management Office (FOI-PMO), last May 20, 2022.
“The Digital Informers” composed of Journalism students from the College of Communication (COC), Princess Friel Lontoc, Kyle Nicole Marcelino, Maria Allaizah Domiquil, and John Lester Teña, created an Electronic Freedom of Information (eFOI) portal that guides people to make important decisions for May 9, 2022 elections. The eFOI portal also promotes awareness about the constitutional right of people to access public information and concerns.
Lontoc, one of the researchers and interpreter, mentioned the essence of FOI, “Patuloy nating padaluyin ang malayang kalakaran ng impormasyon dahil isa ito sa susi upang makamit ang isang gobyernong tapat at mahusay.”
This year, the FOI-PMO launched this new initiative titled #InfoDataQuest: Advancing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 16.10 through Freedom of Information (FOI) and Data Analytics in the Philippines. One of the activities to achieve the project is holding a data storytelling competition.
“In a data-driven world, data analytics could be one of our innovative tools in exacting public accountability from the government to ensure government officials are held liable and responsible for their actions and decisions.” Kristian R. Abalan, PCOO Undersecretary for Administration, Finance, and Freedom of Information, said in a virtual awarding ceremony.
The team received a gift certificate worth P15,000 and a plaque.
