The three-decade long partnership of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and Philippine Cooperative Center (PCC) in helping promote the value of cooperativism among Filipinos will continue as they renew their partnership through an amended memorandum of agreement (MOA) inked last January 14. Based on the amended MOA signed by PUP and PCC, represented by PUP President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi and PCC Chairperson Dr. Garibaldi O. Leonardo, both parties will be “working closely to further strengthen concerted efforts, which are principally aimed at enhancing quality cooperative education, research capability, technical assistance, and other cooperative-related services that are deemed responsive and relevant to the needs of the cooperative movement.” The renewed partnership will also focus on different initiatives and enhancements of linkages with other academic institutions, as well as cooperative industries/services/entities as part of the intention to disseminate more relevant information and impart new insights on how to strengthen the role of cooperatives as economic enterprises that have the vast growth potential, and how a cooperative education can contribute to spurring socio-economic growth. It is said that the cooperative sector in the Philippines have at least 10 million active members and 18,000 operating cooperative that directly employ some 600,000 personnel and indirectly employ 2 million more.
