The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, through the Open University System, inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Sandiwaan Center for Learning (SCL) for the PUP Education on Wheels on June 9, 2021.
The PUP Education on Wheels is a University flagship program that aims to deliver quality education to the communities directly through a converted bus or mobile shipping containers converted into a classroom.
In the MOA, signed by PUP President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi and SCL President and CEO Rev. Fr. Benigno P. Beltran, PUP will offer Sandiwaan baccalaureate programs with the initial offering of Bachelor of Science in Office Administration specifically on Medical Transcription, while the Sandiwaan will oversee the recruitment of students and the Learning Resource Center.
The Education on Wheels is targeting 40-50 students in the initial offering and aims to reach more youth who do not have access to education through a community-based set-up as the Education on Wheels continues to roll.
The project will roll along the areas of Smokey Mountain to deliver education to the Youths of Tondo. This will give them the opportunity to learn skills for in-demand jobs, thus, will give them a better chance to get employed in the different companies in the Philippines and even abroad.
This MOA between PUP and Sandiwaan is a rebirth project since PUP OUS has already been with Sandiwaan for almost 20 years now where the trainers provided educational expertise to the out-of-school youths in Tondo. According to Fr. Beltran, almost 90% of those who took the program were able to get employed upon finishing the program.
Also present during the MOA signing were Vice President for Research, Extension, and Development Dr. Anna Ruby P. Gapasin, OUS Executive Director Dr. Carmencita L. Castolo, and the Education on Wheels committee members.
