Joey Danting, News, National Service Training Program
With the goal of bringing a glimmer of hope to street children in the Intramuros Fire Station, PUP National Service Training Program (NSTP) successfully conducted its first on-site activity, ABaKaDa sa Kalsada, together with the PUP Samahang Nagtataguyod ng Iisang Diwa’t Adhika (SANDIWA) and NSTP faculty members last December 22, 2022.
ABaKaDa sa Kalsada is composed of storytelling, games, gift-giving, safety tips, and food distribution for the participants of different age ranges who are eager to learn.
According to Ms. Mary Ann “Teacher Dang” Dureza, the volunteer-teacher who single-handedly accommodated the beneficiaries, ABaKaDa sa Kalsada was a huge help to her because she knew that PUP NSTP and Sandiwa could provide other educational information to the kids that she couldn’t. She also believes that these out-of-school youth can still catch up to other kids and that there is a great future for them. She hoped that most of the children may receive scholarships and educational assistance so that other out-of-school kids would be motivated and encouraged to continue learning and attend school in the future.
At the end of the activity, the beneficiaries performed a thanksgiving song and dance number to the organizers of the activity as a way of appreciating the efforts given by the volunteers.
Prior to this, a donation drive was launched with the help of generous people who offered monetary donations that were used to bring smiles to 31 children who received gifts, food, and safety whistles from this initiative. PUP NSTP Director Dr. Rovelina B. Jacolbia and NSTP CWTS Chief Asst. Professor Joey T. Danting together with the Sandiwa Officers are among the facilitators of this on-site activity.
