“The role of young people is to influence public opinion and to counter misinformation,” stressed out by Mong Palatino, Bayan Metro Manila chairperson, one of the speakers during the 4-hour National Minimum Wage Forum at the Bulwagang Bonifacio held on August 2, 2018.
The program revolved on the theme “Wages give, Taxes take” wherein it targeted to raise students’ and young peoples' awareness regarding tax increase and proposed charter change. Moreover, it highlighted the perceived effects of Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) law to government employees.
“Hindi na tayo nakakabili ng mga gusto natin dahil sa increased tax na ipinataw ng TRAIN Law na kung saan bumaba ang tax ng manggagawa pero tumaas naman ang cost of living dahil sa inflation rate,” pointed out Benjamin Valbuena, ACT chairperson.
Professor Arian Camba, Samuel S. Santiago, and Professor Patrick Henry Manguera served as the panel of reactors who rendered their different perspectives regarding the topic. Camba, from UGPUP, delivered his reactions through his free verse poem.
Lecturers also emphasized that the “impossible” today could be possible tomorrow and called for people to propose new truths and settle new demands for the real charter change.
The forum was organized and conducted by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ Center for Labor and Industrial Relations, in cooperation with Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) and Bayan Metro Manila.
