The Polytechnic University of the Philippines, together with the Department of Public Works and Highways, marked the start of construction of the new PUP Rizal Campus through a groundbreaking ceremony held on December 14, 2021.
The new PUP Rizal Campus located at the heart of University Belt in Lepanto, Manila will house the Institute of Technology and the College of Law, which are currently situated in the Main Campus.
According to the Physical Planning and Development Office (PPDO), the new campus will have a 7-storey building with 13 classrooms, 9 offices, student centers, moot court, and an assembly hall, which is estimated to be completed in two years. The new building was donated by Senator Koko Pimentel and will be constructed by PUP and DPWH- National Capital Region.
According to PUP College of Law Dean Atty. Gemy Lit Festin, they are “overjoyed” upon hearing the news and said that building and facilities will be a great help to the college’s students, especially during reviews and training.
“Back then, we do not have a building that will house the College of Law and we transferred from one building to another. The law community at one point, was so happy when they heard that this lot where we are standing right now, is designated for the construction of the law building, if I were not mistaken, sometime in 2005. There was also a ground-breaking event that took place but later on, it became a heart-breaking one, (after the ground-breaking) when it did not eventually materialize. So now that we are actually seeing its construction, overjoyed would be a good word to describe what I feel. It is the materialization of our faith — not just me but of the professors and students as well, both past and present,” said Dean Festin.
“The building to be constructed will include not only classrooms but also facilities that are vital to a law student’s learning such as a library, moot courtroom, students’ hall, and review center room. These facilities will be to the advantage of the students during their study time and training. Also, since the building will only be housing the College of Law, we can better implement health and safety guidelines because we can better monitor the number of people who will come in and out of the infrastructure,” he added.
In 2019, the college was able to produce its first bar topnotcher - Atty. Jun Decter Roxas who ranked number 9. Aside from the Juris Doctor Program, COL also offers a Refresher's Program and PUP Bar Review Center which started in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
