A total of 30,000 bottles or 3,600 liters of locally produced ethyl alcohol with virgin coconut oil were distributed by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines to its 24 adopted barangays in Manila on June 11, 2021.
On March 8, Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST)-PUP started the initial production of ethyl alcohol with VCO through funding from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). RIST has previously produced ethyl alcohol to meet the increased demand for disinfectants during the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.
RIST Director Dr. Armin S. Coronado said that they innovated on the formulation and recently added VCO because of its anti-viral properties. RIST assured that the PUP’s version of ethyl alcohol followed the requirements and standards of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In total, PUP has already distributed more than 13,000 liters of alcohol since its production in March 2021. Among the beneficiaries are the PUP community, 24 barangays, five (5) hospitals, and two (2) police precincts in the City of Manila.
