A total of 8,613 candidates for graduation flocked to the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City on May 12, 13 and 14 for the 2014 year-end commencement exercises of the country’s first polytechnic and largest state university.
The Class of 2014 from the main campus of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in Sta. Mesa, Manila included 117 magna cum laude and 387 cum laude honorees.
PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman led the hooding of 354 master’sand doctorate-degree graduates on May 12. President De Guzman also conferred degrees to 4,922 graduates in the May 13 cluster and 3,337 graduates in the May 14 cluster of this year’s commencement exercises.
The May 13 cluster included the College of Arts and Letters (CAL) with 292 graduates; College of Engineering (CoE), 794; College of Education (CoEd), 666; College of Accountancy and Finance (CAF), 1,377; Open University/Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program/Non-Traditional Studies Program (OU/ETEEAP/NTSP), 108; College of Architecture and Fine Arts (CAFA), 91; College of Human Kinetics (CHK), 80; and College of Business Administration (CBA), 1,514.
The May 14 cluster was composed of the College of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS), 383; College of Tourism, Hospitality and Transportation Management (CTHTM), 565; College of Political Science and Public Administration (CPSPA), 112; College of Social Sciences and Development (CSSD), 541; College of Law (CoL), 11; College of Communication (CoC), 626; College of Science (CS), 488; and Institute of Technology (IT), 611.
The three-day event at the PICC featured the following commencement speakers: Hon. Henry Lim Bon Liong, chairman and chief executive officer of Sterling Group of Companies; Hon. Isidro A. Consunji, chief executive officer and president of DMCI Holdings, Inc.; Hon. Roman T. Romulo, member of the House of Representatives; Hon. Jose Rizalino L. Acuzar, chairman of New San Jose Builders Incorporated; Hon. Reghis M. Romero II, chairman of the board and founder of R-II Holdings, Incorporated; and Hon. Cynthia A. Villar, member of the Philippine Senate.
President De Guzman conferred honorary degrees to Lim (Doctor of Science), Consunji (Doctor of Humanities), Acuzar (Doctor of Fine Arts); and Romero II (Doctor of Humanities) upon the recommendation of the PUP Academic Council and approval of the Board of Regents.
The University President also bestowed the PUP Tanglaw ng Bayan Award to Sen. Cynthia A. Villar and Rep. Roman T. Romulo. Tanglaw ng Bayan is the highest award of recognition handed by PUP to individuals who excel in their respective vocations.
Other University officials, members of the Board of Regents, deans, directors, chairpersons, and faculty members witnessed the graduation rites.
