The Polytechnic University of the Philippines Open University System (OUS) and College of Communication (COC) in collaboration with the Philippine Center for Investigative Research (PCIJ) conducted a two-day online lecture series on investigative reporting with the theme “Amplifying Issues Through Investigative Broadcast Journalism.” The online lecture series held last August 28-29 intend to instill values for upholding press freedom and share best practices among participating faculty, students and aspiring investigative journalists.
On the first day, Malou Mangahas, former Executive Director of PCIJ lectured on the basics and how to’s of Investigative Journalism (IJ); followed by Raffy Tima, anchor and reporter of GMA 7 who discussed best practices on Mobile Journalism (MOJO). Bryan Kristoffer Brazil, producer of documentaries for GMA shared his formula in coming up with good stories and finally, Atty. Jose Manuel Diokno covered the legal aspects of IJ particularly the rule of law and prevailing conditions in the justice system in relation to investigative reporting.
On the second day, Danilo Arao from the UP Department of Journalism delivered his notes on IJ in the era of misinformation and disinformation; while Vincent Go, photojournalist from the Nightwatchers lectured on continuing challenges in covering human rights. Atty. Michael Jobert Navallo, justice beat reporter of ABS-CBN spoke on the weaponization of the law to stifle criticism and dissent followed by Melinda Quintos-de Jesus, Executive Director of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), giving insights on the state of media freedom in the country.
The event was graced by Dr. Divina Pasumbal, Dean of COC who gave the opening remarks; Dr. Manuel Muhi, PUP President, who delivered his welcome message to all organizers, guest-lecturers and participants; Ms. Floreen Simon, OIC of PCIJ who also gave a message; and Dr. Rudolf Anthony Lacerna, Overall Chair of the organizing committee who provided an overview of the event.
John Robert Bolledo from GMA Stand for Truth and Zhander Cayabyab from ABS-CBN served as moderators during the two-day lecture series while Prof. Princess Esponilla and Prof. Pamela Muhi acted as emcees. Dr. Hemmady Mora, chairperson of the PUP Dept. of Journalism gave the synthesis during the first day while Dr. Maria Lourdes Garcia delivered the introductory remarks during the second day. Finally, Dr. Carmencita Castolo, Executive Director of the Open University System gave the closing remarks.
The event was held in time for the celebration of the founding anniversary of the PUP College of Communication.
