To help foster emotional equilibrium, especially among the youth, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP)-BroadCircle hosted the PUP Music Video Festival 2020 with the theme, “Bago ang Lahat, Ako Muna,” which highlights the creativity of PUP freshmen broadcasting students through their music video entries that promote mental health awareness, last March 20 via BroadCircle’s Facebook page.
At the height of this pandemic where COVID-19 sickened millions of people around the world and took the lives of thousands, the mental well-being of many has been challenged caused by isolation, lockdowns, and the shift to the new-normal setup. Through the lens of the camera and musicality of the students, the 39 entries of this year’s festival revealed the different issues and stigma concerning mental health and reminded everyone about the importance of self-love in battling with emotional and psychological challenges and struggles.
In her opening remarks, the new College of Communication (COC) Dean Dr. Hemmady Mora shared her excitement about the festival and congratulated the people behind the event..
“I am a hundred percent sure na maipagmamalaki ang mga production output ninyo because the limitations of this pandemic is a test of resourcefulness, ingenuity,and creativity at diyan mahuhusay ang mga PUPians.” she said.
BroadCircle Adviser and Audio-Visual Technique Professor George Vincent Gamayo expressed his satisfaction about the outputs and reminded the students about the importance of self-love.
“Laging piliing maging mabuti, maging sa ating sarili.” he told.
Music video directors Niq Ablao, Yanyan Gervero, Edrex Clyde Sanchez, and Ria Red shared their insights about the technical aspect such as cinematography, color grading, different shots, transitions, concepts and stories of this year’s entry. Red commended the technical components of Abot Tanaw, the official entry of the Silab Production.
“Nice, uniform color-grading all throughout. Great shots, and experimentation with cuts and transitions. Good pacing of the video as well, accurately captured the emotion of the concept.” she stated.
Furthermore, Ablao also praised the technicalities of Kinaiya, the music video entry of Cinefilo Production.
“The editing and video treatment is really above satisfactory especially with the use of different shots inside a frame, diffusion effect and grading especially on a dream-like scene.” he noted.
For the first time, this year’s MV Fest was held virtually and participants followed certain health and safety protocols imposed by the government and organizations in producing the music videos.
PUP BroadCircle, the premier academic organization of the COC Department of Broadcasting pioneered the annual Music Video Festival and it has become a platform for certain causes, especially on pressing issues. This year’s entries include; “Abot Tanaw,” “Apuhap,” “Bagong Ikaw,” Banyuhay,” “Bittersweet Blues,”Buntong Hininga,” “Dantay,” Dulo ng Kalawakan,” “Enough Compromising You,” “Grey,” “Hayo,” “Hindi ka Nag-iisa,” “Ikaw Muna,” “Ikaw sa Magulong Mundo,” “It’s Okay not to be Okay,” “Kapit,” “Kinaiya,” “Kinaya,” “KPL,” “Maybe,” “Ode to Hue,” “On hold,” “Pag-alpas,” “Paglaya sa Yakap,” “Pahinga,” “Panahon,” “Paruparo,” “Puhon,” “Sa Dilim,” “Saudade,” “Sign-Out,” “Sinag,” “Tapik,” “Tayo,” “Tinig,” “Underneath,” “Upos,” “Upuan Man,” and “Withhold” raised awareness about mental health.
