Pandemic Literature from the Philippines and Japan: Narratives of Hope, Resilience and Essential Insights in Overcoming Covid-19 Crisis as the theme of the event and was conceptualized from the idea of the current global pandemic that quarantined, isolated and hindered our social mobility, but not our creativity. Website launching, conversations on writing in times of pandemic, and featuring the works of 12 selected authors from the Philippines and Japan was held on December 12, 2020 via Zoom and Facebook Live.
Selected and edited literatures from the Philippines and Japan were published in an online platform; naming the lists of authors and their short stories written in Filipino were Rommel Pamaos’ Hindi Taga-rito, and Benjo Gutierrez’s Nang Tumawa ang Diyos; and those that are written in Nihongo were Yoshito Ehara’s Asa kara Ban made Shinata Korona Uirusu, and Ryoya Naito’s Nigeru; lastly of short stories that are written in English were Boots Agbayani-Pastor’s The Madonna and Her Child, and Elaine Quidato’s The Whereabouts of Hope followed by Personal Essays in Filipino language were Beverly Siy’s Diskaril, and Paul Serafica’s Mula Japan Pabalik ng Pilipinas: Kuwentong Face Mask para sa mga Pasaway; written in Nihongo were Yusuke Hidaka’s 2020 nen no Bundan to Setsuzoku, and Shingo Ito’s Ushinawareta Toshi; and those works that are written in English were Eliezer Evangelista’s The Eastern Waves of Hope and Survival: A Story of Existential Migration, and Khatarina Martinez’s Times Being What They Are. Project team and editors of the event were Prof. Romeo Peña, Prof. Jomar Adaya, Prof. Tomoaki Takeshita, Prof. Roan Jessa Dino, and Prof. Mayluck Malaga.
About the project proponent and partners, the Philippine Society of Young Educators of Languages and the Arts initiated the project with funding support from The Japan Foundation Manila in partnership with Center for Language and Literary Studies (CLLS) and the Center for Social History (CSH) of Polytechnic University of the Philippines with an aim of gathering different experiences to collectively remember in the near future.
