The Polytechnic University of the Philippines together with the Philippine Institute of Environmental Planners (PIEP) NCR Chapter held a capacity building activity titled “Pagtatanghal sa ating mga Punong Kaibigan: A Tree Naming and Labelling Workshop of the Perennial Flora at Parish Churches of Metro Manila”. It was commenced at Saint John the Baptist Church, Pinaglabanan, San Juan City last May 28, under the leadership of Dr. Armin S. Coronado, Director of the Research Institute for Science and Technology (RIST).
Participants include church members and workers who learned about the parts of the plant, the general plant groups and forms, and the various importance of plants. Prof. Ma. Eleanor C. Salvador, PUP Herbarium head curator and Prof. Christine Joy S. Luna, PUP Herbarium curator led the morning session lectures.
A brief tour in the vicinity of Saint John the Baptist Church allowed participants to identify the collection sites and be briefed on basic plant collection, preservation, and documentation. They were also given the opportunity to undertake actual collection and processing of plant specimens during the afternoon workshop. The actual collection, documentation and preservation of plant specimens were guided faculties-in-charge and BS Biology major in Botany students.
The total number of collected specimens, their characteristics, and their identifications are being verified in the PUP Herbarium. These will be used for the planned exhibit to be conducted on June 2022 at the Saint John the Baptist Church.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Ibylou B. Golla, representative of the PIEP and a PUP Herbarium curator, emphasized the need to fully support these kinds of initiatives from a broad coalition of organizations “to ensure the sustainability of our ecosystem.” The awarding of certificates to the participants culminated the workshop.
