Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Education empowered hundreds of student-leaders through the leadership training and workshop titled “EMPOWERED POINTS: Enhancing Student Officers’ Skills towards Sustainable Leadership,” spearheaded by the CoEd Council of Leaders on May 28, 2021.
The event started with a motivational talk from the CoEd Dean Dr. Minna L. Comuyog where she lauded the different efforts of the college’s student organizations.
“Your teachers and I believe that youth is the greatest resource any family or nation possesses. You are the leaders of today and the stewards of tomorrow. Kayo ay pinagmamalaki ng inyong pamilya, ng ating paaralan at ng ating bansa. I want you to know that I am happy to meet all of you in this lifetime,” Dr. Comuyog said at the end of her message.
CoEd alumna and the former president of Bachelor of Elementary and Secondary Teaching (BEST) Society Ms. Lissandra Barrioga graced the event with her inspirational talk. She shared her experiences in her journey as a student-leader.
Afterward, the event proceeded to the plenary sessions. In her talk about “Perks of Being a Student-Leader,” Ms. Alyza Jane Caddauan, ELITE President, discussed the advantages of being a student-leader. “Leadership expands your resume, creates networks with people, allows you to gain leadership skills, absorb soft skills, and get a break from study, and makes you enjoy your college life,” she said.
Meanwhile, FBTO Consultant Mr. Angelo Laher with the topic “ BE PROACTIVE: Revisiting Your Principles of Personal Vision towards Sustainable Leadership,” discussed the importance of self-awareness as a proactive leader and the difference between a reactive leader from a proactive leader. Mr. Laher also connected the “love language” to leadership as he believes that one’s love language can be the core of one’s leadership.
Prof. Joey T. Danting, CoEd professor and the Student Activities Coordinator, completed the plenary session with his talk titled “A Reminder to a Leader.” According to Prof. Danting, being a leader is being a good strategist. He highlighted that the first step of becoming a great leader is to convince yourself and believe that you are already a good leader. Dr. Danting also explained the importance of accountability and volunteerism as a leader.“Tuwang tuwa kami sa inyo, nagtiwala kami sa inyo at hindi ninyo sinasayang suportang ibinibigay ng Pamantasan at Kolehiyo para sa inyo,” he said as he extended his appreciation to the student-leaders.
The second part of the leadership training was the 50-minute workshops in four different clusters depending on the officers’ positions. Officers from different organizations under CoEd facilitated each cluster and discussed the eight (8) standardized document templates vital in every student organization.
Dr. Marion A. Cresencio, Associate Dean of PUP-CoEd, ended the event with his closing remarks. According to Dr. Cresencio, “All teachers are already leaders. It is like teaching. So dream big, continue to dream to become a teacher and be a leader. Let us put into our hearts and minds the words printed at the roof of our DepEd schools, be proud you are a teacher, the future depends on you.”
The leadership training and workshop were made interactive and enjoyable by the raffle draws and virtual quizzes between sessions.
