To engage and educate the youth on their roles in addressing environmental issues, the PUP National Service Training Program (PUP-NSTP) and PUP Sandiwa, launched an edu-discussion titled “KLIMAlasakit: Ang Gampanin ng Kabataan sa Pagkamit ng Sustenable at Ligtas na Kinabukasan last October 27. This was done in collaboration with the non-government organization, Ilog Pasiglahin, via Zoom.
“Climate change is not just an environmental issue, it is actually an intersectional issue within other sectors such as poverty, education, health, women and children,” Jefferson Estela, Lead Convenor of Youth Strike 4 Climate Philippines, said as he discussed climate change and its impacts in his presentation titled “Laban Para sa Klimabukasan: Ang Kabataan at Climate Action sa Pilipinas”. He stated that climate change is no longer considered to accurately reflect the seriousness of the overall situation but climate emergency or climate crisis instead, to describe the broader impact of climate change.
Joven Christian Jacolbia, Co-Convenor and Youth Engagement Coordinator of Ilog Pasiglahin, focused on “Ilog Pasiglahin: Ang Halaga at Mga Banta sa Ilog Pasig sa Gitna ng Climate Change” (trans. Revitalize our Pasig River: The Significance and Threats Posed on Pasig River Amid Climate Change). Here, he emphasized the paramount essence of Ilog Pasig to our history and to the entire country especially in the survival of the humanity, transportation, temperature, and wildlife. He also featured the historical spots, various contributions and as well as the possible and feasible projects that could happen soon, only by saving the Ilog Pasig.
“Yung future natin kinikitil din natin, dahil kung palala nang palala ang climate change at global warming ay parang nasa point of no return na tayo at medyo existential siya kaya kailangan na natin kumilos ngayon para sa ating kasaysayan, sa ating kasalukuyan, pati na rin sa ating kinabukasan,” Mr. Jacolbia said.
(Trans. “As global warming worsens and the impacts of climate change continue to become widespread, we are fast approaching the ‘point of no return.’ Our future is in peril, and this could become one of the more important existential questions of our lives. We need to act now to preserve our past, endure the present, and secure our future.”)
University officials such as University President Dr. Manuel M. Muhi, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Services Prof. Tomas O. Testor, and NSTP Director Dr. Rovelina B. Jacolbia shared messages of support and inspiration during the online activity.
Bea Dolores, Leader of The Climate Reality Philippines, and the Co-Founder of Renacimiento Manila Heritage Group, delivered her closing remarks where she shared life experiences and accomplishments. She also shared ways on how the participants can participate and take part in every environmental action.
“When we take care of our Mother Nature, she can take good care of us and Mother Nature can protect us, if only we take care of her too,” Dolores concluded.
This is the first event of PUP NSTP and PUP Sandiwa, together with Ilog Pasiglahin, for the present academic term. The activity garnered approximately 6,000 participants from different PUP branches and campuses.
