Over 160 students alongside faculty members and advocates from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines celebrated this year’s Earth Day in an activity called “Climate Justice through the Arts.” The initiative was held last Sunday, April 23, 2023, at the PUP Amphitheater. New partner, 350 Pilipinas, worked with the University’s National Service Training Program (NSTP) and Samahang Nagtataguyod ng Iisang Diwa’t Adhika (SANDIWA) to organize the said event.
Through “artivism” workshop, spoken poetry, and climate strike, students shared their perspectives and their own climate advocacies through their own art. This is consistent with the university’s advocacy for climate justice, pursued through campus-based programs encouraging renewable energy, energy efficiency, and inclusive mobility.
“These types of activities can inspire people to start their journey in making positive changes towards sustainability inside their campus,” Ara Alejo, Advocacy Officer for 350 Pilipinas shared.
NSTP Director Dr. Rovelina B. Jacolbia, Civil Welfare Training Service Chief Asst. Prof. Joey T. Danting, and Chief of PUP Center for Environmental Studies Mr. Jimmy Fernando collaborated to make this activity happen.
Recently, the University also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with climate justice campaigner 350 Pilipinas with the aim to pursue campus-based programs in areas of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and inclusive mobility on campus and in the wider community. With these efforts, the PUP community expects cleaner and fossil-free years to come.
