Four(4) students from the Diploma in Computer Engineering Technology of PUP Institute of Technology (ITECH) placed second in the SIBOL Award for Outstanding College Student Creative Research and 3rd in the Best Video Presentation in the 2021 Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) conducted by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI) last November 8-10.
The winning team is composed of Rio Alyssa V. Venturina, Sean Kyle A. Alfonso, Blair Jurgen L. Chacon, and Duanne Lim of the Computer Engineering Technology under Engineering Technology Department (DCET 3-2).
The students were endorsed to compete for RICE with their entry titled “Smart Solar-Powered Indoor Aquaponics” or SIA, which was one of only five teams from the National Capital Region to pass the qualifying round (NCR). They were declared finalists by the panel of judges, allowing them to advance to the final round.
The top five finalists were required to submit a five (5)-minute video presentation about their entries, which was posted on the DOST-TAPI Facebook Page and scored based on their engagement rate, with the highest engagement rate being the People's Choice.
The results placed the PUP ITECH team as second in the SIBOL category and third in the best video presentation. Aside from the title, the team was awarded Php 15,000 cash prize.
The team was led by their professor, Dr. Ryan S. Evangelista and Engr. Jose Marie B. Dipay of PUP ITECH.
RICE is a nationwide initiative that emphasizes the significance of Filipino inventors in the landscape of national economic development by providing appropriate platforms, especially in light of the new normal. Both public and private inventors and researchers from across the country can enter the regional competition.
