“Sining at Kamalayang Pilipino,” a series of ten on-line masterclasses on the Philippine arts, will be held by the Dalubhasaan sa Sining at Kultura (DESK), with the help of Tanghalang Pilipino, for thirty four selected faculty members of the College of Arts and Letters of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, for ten full days spread out over four weeks from September 1 to 24, 2021. One day is reserved for each of the arts, with lectures and videos on the history and prospects of that art form in the morning (9am to 12 noon), and a workshop for participants to upgrade PUP art appreciation syllabi with inputs from the lecture as well as for groups of participants to prepare and deliver lecture demos analysing specific art works or genres in the afternoon (1:30 to 5:30 pm). Essays relating to the history of the art forms as well as videos documenting art forms and art works will be assigned as readings to participants to prepare them for each lecture-workshop day.
The first week will begin with a lecture on the first day, September 1, on the theme of the lecture series, “Sining at Kamalayang Pilipino,” situating and evaluating the arts in relation to the full development of the Filipino as a human being; and then open with the series on the second day, September 2, with the lecture and workshop on Philippine Literature. The second week will focus on the performing arts – theater, music and dance—with lecturers speaking on the history and challenges of Philippine theater, dance, and music in the mornings, and supervising the creative workshops in the afternoons on September 6, 8, and 10. The third week will have lectures and videos on the history and prospects of Philippine visual arts, architecture, and radio, television, and internet and corresponding workshops in the afternoon, on September 13, 15, and 17. Finally, on the fourth week, the series ends with a lecture and videos on the history and prospects of Philippine film in the morning and a final workshop on three approaches to film criticism in the afternoon, on September 23. The seminar-workshop ends with an evaluation and resolution session in the morning and a recognition ceremony in the afternoon, on September 24.
