A total of 2,283 Senior High School students attended this year’s Polytechnic University of the Philippines Senior High School Commencement Exercises, September 8, 2021, via live streaming at PUP official Facebook Page and PUP CreaTV Youtube Channel.
PUP SHS conferred SHS academic degrees to students from Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM), Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS), General Academic Strand (GAS), Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Tourism, and Arts and Design.
As part of the University’s yearly commencement tradition, the Tanglaw ng Bayan (Light of Nation) Award was given to two speakers. Such an award is the highest recognition granted by the university to individuals who have outstanding achievements and significant contributions to their field of expertise.
The first awardee was Mr. Gian Javelona, an alumnus of PUP College of Engineering where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in computer engineering. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Orange Apps Inc., a technology solution company that provides school management systems across educational institutions in the Philippines.
Mr. Javelona was the commencement speaker during the AM cluster. In his commencement speech, he emphasized the value of grit in achieving success in life. He mentioned that he has experienced a lot of failures during the start of his journey but did not let these failures be hindrances to his goals, “Hindi po ako takot magkamali at ‘yun ang isang advantage ko…Okay lang ang magkamali as long as matututo ka. Marami na akong naging mali at wala ako sa sitwasyon ko ngayon kung hindi dahil sa mga maling iyon.”
He also stressed that he attributes his success to his experiences in PUP, “Masasabi ko po na…kung di po ako nag-aral sa PUP at kung hindi ko naranasan lahat ng pag hihirap na iyon…Wala pong orange apps dahil sa lahat ng iyon.”
The Tanglaw ng Bayan award was also given to Mr. Eugene A. Tamayo III, Assistant Vice President of the Philippine National Bank. He is an alumnus of PUP College of Business Administration where he got his bachelor’s degree in office administration and master’s degree in business administration.
Speaking to his virtual audience, Mr. Tamayo reminded the students to be compliant and learn how to prioritize school activities, “Make sure that before posting anything in your My Day and dailies, you were able to finish your work or assignment…”.
Mr. Tamayo also highlighted the value of open communication to the teachers especially during the times when the students are lost with the discussions. He concluded his speech by saying, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change your own world."
Meanwhile, Zyra Mae S. Plegaria (AM Cluster) and Andrea Nicole M. Abdon (PM Cluster) delivered their valedictory speeches.
The program was ended with messages from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Commissioner and PUP Board of Regent Dr. Ronald L. Adamat, CHED Chairman J. Prospero E. De Vera III, and Senator Joel Villanueva.
