The College of Social Sciences and Development - Department of Psychology, in collaboration with its College Faculty Club and Psychology Students Association, conducted a Mental Health Webinar titled "Coming Back Stronger and Better: Humanizing and Embracing Total Well-being" on August 11, 2021.
Attended by faculty members and students, the webinar was designed to emphasize mental health and its effects on students' well-being as they prepare for the opening of another academic year.
Mr. Ralph Jayson C. Pallon, a registered psychologist and psychometrician, a certified specialist in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, and a part-time faculty member from the PUP Department of Psychology served as the resource speaker of the event.
Mr. Pallon started his discussion by asking the participants about what is going on in their lives and how it affects their mental health. Several participants shared their personal thoughts and experiences through a “virtual freedom wall.”
During the session, Mr. Pallon described mental health and explained various models of well-being and wellness, and discussed Resilience or the ability to recover from and adjust easily to adversity or change, and emphasized how developing this ability can help improve one’s overall mental health. Mr. Pallon also introduced the concept of “antifragility”, a similar idea, which explains how one does not only resist shocks or struggles but also get better through these experiences.
Before the end of the discussion, the participants were able to talk about their stressors and how they cope with them where each of them was able to learn from their different coping mechanisms.
