The Center for Inclusion and Diversity (CID), led by Chief Louie Montemar in partnership with the Lasallian Justice and Peace Commission of De La Salle Philippines, spearheaded the webinar entitled "Inclusion and Elections: The Youth in the 2022 Elections" via Zoom and aired on Facebook Live last June 30.
The webinar was organized to launch CID's advocacy campaign to encourage the youth to register as voters and join in the national elections in 2022.
Dr. Ronald D. Holmes, President of Pulse Asia Research, Inc., and a professor at De La Salle University-Manila for 36 years and handles courses on research methodology, comparative politics, and Philippine politics served as the resource speaker in the forum.
In the discussion, Dr. Holmes emphasized the importance of young people in partaking in the 2022 national elections. He also talked about the difference in terms of number, age, and location of the votes of every presidential election from 1992 to 2016.
Dr. Holmes stressed that in choosing the right people, voters should know and weigh each of the candidates’ competence, skills, and advocacy for the country. He also shared a quotation from John J. Carrol, S.J, saying, "Change takes time. Therefore, there is no time to lose."
In the open forum, when asked about the possible effect of the youth’s vote in next year’s election, Dr. Holmes said that “If all of the youth will vote, if all 10 out of 10 youth will turn out, that's about what? 3-4 million, that actually makes a big difference in terms of a single-winner competition like the presidency,” Dr. Holmes answered.
Dr. Ronald also shares his sentiments about the upcoming 2022, and the next elections are becoming something close to the 1992 election where the winner won with only 22% of the national vote.
