Polytechnic University of the Philippines students proved their innovativeness once more in the Aramco-Enactus Innovative Challenge National Finals 2017 where they were awarded secondrunner up. The competition was held at Asian Institute of Management Conference Center, Makati City last August 19, 2017.
PUP Team Luminaries members Rachel Dee Pecio and Juan Miguel Manuel, Computer Engineering students presented the research titled “SILAW : a Hybrid Renewable Energy-Powered Light Buoy System Harnessing Sea Energy Potentials”. They were accompanied and coached by the College of Engineering Research Coordinator Engr. Joselinda M. Golpeo and College of Engineering Extension and Community Involvement Coordinator Engr. Orlean G. dela Cruz.
SILAW is invented by PUP alumni Christopher Renz Arnau, John Angelo Mariano, Ian Kenneth Poblete and Jann Warren Aralar, under the supervision of Engr. Pedrito M. Tenerife Jr. and Engr. Orland D. Tubola III as advisers.
The Aramco-Enactus Innovative Challenge recognizes innovative solutions relevant to climate change, environmental sustainability, and energy efficiency.
Aside from SILAW, there were 16 other project entries submitted by other universities from around the country. Five entries made it to the finals and competed for the coveted crown. Holy Trinity College of Davao won 1st runner up while University of the Philippines Diliman was hailed as champion and will compete in Beijing, China to represent the Philippines in the world competition.
