Multi-awarded educator, writer and performer Dr. Rustica C. Carpio, a distinguished alumna of the Philippine College of Commerce/ Polytechnic University of the Philippines, received the Nora Aunor Ulirang Artista Lifetime Achievement Award during the 30th Anniversary celebration of the Philippine Movie Press Club last March 9, 2014. The PMPC Star Awards for Movies is an award giving body that honors the best of Filipino films annually.
Acknowledged as the first Dean of what was then known as the PUP College of Languages and Mass Communication (CLMC), the former Dean of the PUP Graduate School is recognized for being an acclaimed artist in the fields of theater, film, television, radio and literature.
Dr. Carpio’s first major theater role was in “The New Yorker in Tondo” which was directed by Lamberto Avellana at the Del Rosario Brothers Theater in 1960. Her first appearance in a film was in “Nunal sa Tubig”, an Ishmael Bernal masterpiece which was shown 1976. She also authored poems, literary works and criticisms, plays, and reference books in communications.
Dr. Carpio once served as member of the panel of judges in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, Catholic Mass Media Awards and the Gawad CCP para sa Telebisyon. She was also appointed as member of the Movie and Television Review Classification Board (MTRCB), the National Committee on Cultural Information of the National Commission on Culture and Arts and the Optical Media Board.
The 83-year-old icon of Philippine culture and arts has reaped honors as recipient of the Top Ten Most Outstanding Women of the Philippines award from the Federacion Internacional de Abogadas (1968); City of Manila’s Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan sa Larangan ng Tanghalan/Dula award (2003); National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ Dangal ng Haraya Lifetime Achievement for Writing and Art Criticism (2007); The Outstanding Filipino Award for Culture and Arts from the Junior Chamber International Senate Philippines (2008); Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino Gawad Urian Best Actress award for “Lola” (2010); Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Science Lifetime Achievement Award for Lifetime Dedication to Drama and the Arts (2010); Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran, Iran Best Actress award for “Lola” (2010); Quezon City’s Gawad Parangal for Outstanding Citizens (2011); and the Gawad Tagapanuring mga Akademisyan ng Aninong Gumagalaw’s Isa sa Kapuri-puring Artista ng Dekada award (2012).
