The newly established Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies (CIPS) of the Institute of Human and Social Development in cooperation with the Tunay na Alyansa ng Bayan Alay sa Katutubo (TABAK) conducted their first forum titled “Hindi Hari, Hindi Pari; Sumisibol sa Lahat ng Lahi; Kwentuhan ng mga Katutubong Pilipino.” which was held on September 7, 2018 at the Bulwagang Bonifacio, NALLRC, PUP Main.
Main Speaker Ms. Amirah Ali Lidasan from Moro-Christian Peoples Alliance (MCPA) discussed the plight of Philippine National Minorities being economically and politically marginalized ethnolinguistic group in the Philippines. “Historically, the Moro people and the Indigenous people fought Spanish and American colonial rule in defense of their land and culture, and the indigenous form of governance. However, in the formation of the Filipino nation, the Moro and Indigenous peoples became minorities and segregates from Philippine “majority,” Lidasan emphasized.
In addition to this, Mr. Kerlan Fanagel and Mr. Tyronne Beyer from the Philippine Task Force for Indigenous People (PTFIP) said that they have been suffering for a very long time from the national oppression in the forms of land grabbing, oppressive laws and extractive projects.
Closing the program, Prof. Patrick Henry Manguera, Chief of Center for Indigenous Peoples Studies (CIPS) said that the event was a kick-off to introduce the existence of the Indigenous People and its important role to the University and the society.
After the program, a ribbon cutting ceremony for the exhibit featuring indigenous people was held headed by Dr, Anna Ruby P. Gapasin, Vice President for Research, Extension and Development (OVPRED).
