PUP President Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman led the PUP contingent consisting of around 5,000 students, faculty members, employees and Lumad marchers in a solidarity walk in time for the first State of the Nation Address (SONA) of newly-elected President Rodrigo Roa Duterte on July 25, 2016.
According to Dr. De Guzman, the solidarity walk aimed to show PUP community’s support to the Duterte administration and to ask for higher budget for State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) in the country. “We believe that public higher education should be a priority of the government”, Dr. De Guzman said in a video interview posted in PUP’s official Facebook page.
Jeepneys were hired to take the PUP delegation to a meet up point before they finally march towards Batasang Pambansa. The PUP contingent then marched with Dr. De Guzman and other university officials in the frontline to personally inform Pres. Duterte about the present condition and needs of the University as well as petition for free education in PUP and other SUCs.
The delegation may not have made it inside the venue but it definitely was seen by most of the Filipino people who also went there to support the new Philippine President.
