On March 22, 2017, PUP’s Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations (ILIR) brought its first labor seminar to the graduating class of PUP Santo Tomas, Batangas.
The seminar held at the university gymnasium of PUP Santo Tomas was attended by six hundred and fifty two (652) graduating students from different courses. Dr. Armando A. Torres, Director of PUP Sto Tomas Branch welcomed the participants and emphasized the significance of the seminar in the preparation of the graduating students as new labor entrants, while Prof. Rimando E. Felicia, Director of ILIR explained the rationale of the program.
Distinguished experts from various labor communities who shared their knowledge to the senior class are: Atty. Fidel V. Esteban, Chief at PUP Procurement Management Office; Ms. Leny Madriaga, Administrative Officer and a Master of Arts in Industrial Relations candidate at the University of the Philippines Diliman; and Mr. Nickie Abilar, paralegal at Defend Job Philippines. Topics which were covered and discussed are the people’s rights and privileges at work and their right to association and union.
Meanwhile, PUP ILIR conducted the third batch of BLOGS in PUP Main Campus on March 28, 2017. Bulwagang Claro M. Recto housed the all-day event composed of four hundred and forty four (444) year-end graduating students from different colleges which were divided in two batches and sessions.
The highlight of the event was the opening message of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Undersecretary Joel Maglunsod. He discussed the current labor situations in the Philippines as well as giving updates on new labor policies and how should the working class look for alternatives to confront the labor issues. Usec Maglunsod also challenged and encouraged the soon-to-be members of the labor force to be critically aware of their rights as a worker and to insist the freedom of association and self organization. Through this initiative, the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations (ILIR), headed by Director Rimando E. Felicia, was working on possible collaborative research and education project with the DOLE. In the afternoon session, Unyon ng mga Kawani ng PUP’s (Unaka-PUP) Vice-President, Ms. Marcela Figura, shared bits of ideas on public sector unionism in her welcome message. The successful event was made possible thru the Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Development (OVPREPD) in cooperation with the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA).
True to its goal of instilling awareness on the rights and privileges of the workers, ILIR’s Basic Labor Orientation for Graduating Students (BLOGS) trusts that the seminar at PUP Santo Tomas will be its first among the many BLOGS event which will cater students from other PUP branches and campuses. BLOGS was made possible through the support of the PUP Office of the Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Development, Office of the Vice President for Branches and Campuses, and the Office of the Director of PUP Sto Tomas Branch.
