After four consecutive successes, Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Education’s webinar series, “EdTalk 2021: Achieving Learning Continuity through Innovative Teaching Strategies,” continued to its fifth week tackling the involvement of technology in education with the theme “EduCreate: Harnessing 21st Century Skills through Advancing Digital Learning and Educational Technology for Outcome Based-Education” on June 5, 2021 via ZOOM and Facebook Live.
This week’s speakers were Dr. Girlie Samson from Bulacan State University and Ms. Angelica Agunod from Sampaguita High School, Caloocan who tackled Innovative Instructional Technology for Teaching and Learning in an Outcome-Based Education and Mobilizing Microsoft Office PowerPoint Traversing Digital Learning respectively.
In her talk, Dr. Samson discussed the history and development of technology in education that gave the participants a handful amount of trivia and learnings. She also emphasized in her presentation the importance of future-focused learning and the concept of interaction, discovery, learning, and sharing of new ideas that promote and contribute to the learner’s success.
“Technology Education is now a default,” Dr. Samson said. “Tayong mga teachers, we are also learners… Artificial Intelligence (AI) could never replace teachers. The personal warmth, affection, inspiration learning, and wisdom that teachers offer cannot be replaced by AI,” she answered when asked if there’s a possibility teachers can be replaced by AI or the simulation of human intelligence in machines.
Meanwhile, Ms. Agunod in the topic, “Mobilizing Microsoft Office PowerPoint Traversing Digital Learning” discussed the concept of “gamification” concerning the use of PowerPoint in teaching in the new platform of learning. She shared numerous strategies and templates teachers and pre-service teachers can adapt in teaching the new generation of learners who most likely are technology-reliant children.
“I make it a point na may variation ang activities. That it caters to different learning styles. Nasa disenyo ng iyong pagtuturo kung paano mo sila [mag-aaral] maeengganyong lumahok,” Ms. Agunod said.
“Kasabay ng pag-usbong ng teknolohiya, hindi dapat nawawala ang personal touch mula sa mga guro. Kung paano ito magiging #relatable sa mga bata? Gumamit ng wika o slang ng bata in making gamified powerpoints at alamin ang kasalukuyang kalakaran sa social media tulad ng meme, tiktok, vlog, at paggamit ng hashtag,” she answered when asked about the best way to incorporate the latest trends into a gamified teaching strategy.
Ms. Agunod even shared a Google Drive Containing the templates and video tutorials of her gamified online teaching strategies (https://bit.ly/3pziqcx).
