PUP hosts first National Polytechnic Education Summit

The Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) will hold the National Summit on Polytechnic Education in the Philippines on October 14 to 16, 2026 at the Heritage Hotel in Pasay City. Educators, policymakers, industry partners, and leaders of public and private polytechnic institutions will meet in this inaugural gathering to align national policies with ASEAN standards and draft a common plan for polytechnic education in the country.

Carrying the theme “Igniting the Future: Polytechnic Education as the Catalyst for Philippine Innovation andGlobal Competitiveness,” the three-day summit will cover innovation, industry partnerships, applied research, and work-integrated learning. Mula sa mga gabing ginugol sa pag-aaral at ensayo hanggang sa mga araw na isinantabi para sa pangarap, inani ng 51 mag-aaral ng College of Arts and Letters (CAL) ang bunga ng kanilang pagsisikap sa 2026 Araw ng Pagkilala noong Setyembre 30 sa Bulwagang Bonifacio ng PUP Sta. Mesa Campus.

Sa temang “Agham at Humanidades para sa Mapanuring Pag-iisip, Makataong Kamalayan, at Pananagutang Panlipunan,” kinilala ang mga mag-aaral mula sa Batsyiler ng Sining sa Pag-aaral ng Wikang Ingles (Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies), Batsyiler ng Sining sa Filipinolohiya (Bachelor of Arts in Filipinology), Batsyiler ng Sining sa Pag-aaral ng Panitikan at Kultura (Bachelor of Arts in Literary and Cultural Studies), Batsyiler ng Sining sa Pilosopiya (Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy), at Batsyiler ng Sining ng Pagtatanghal na nagdadalubhasa sa Sining Panteatro (Bachelor of Performing Arts major in Theater Arts) para sa kanilang natatanging ambag sa akademya, sining, pananaliksik, pamumuno, at mga organisasyon.

Higit pa sa mga medalya at sertipiko, naging pagkilala rin ang seremonya sa mga panahong inilaan at mga bagay na isinantabi upang maabot ang tagumpay. Sa bawat parangal ay naroon ang mga oras ng pag-aaral at pagsasanay, pagod na tiniis, at mga pagkakataong ipinagpaliban. Sa likod ng bawat pagkilala ay isang paglalakbay na pinatatag ng tiyaga, disiplina, at suporta ng mga taong naniwala sa kakayahan ng mga mag-aaral.

Sa kanyang pambungad na pananalita, kinilala ng Dekano ng CAL na si Rafael Michael O. Paz, PhD, ang kahusayan at katatagan ng mga mag-aaral sa gitna ng mga hamon sa silid-aralan, pamantasan, at lipunan. “Nawa’y kayo ang maging totoong pag-asa ng bayan sa hinaharap, ang mga munting liwanag sa dilim,” ani Paz.

Bago naging mga “munting liwanag” sa entablado, hinarap muna ng mga mag-aaral ang mga araw na puno ng pagod, pagsasanay, at pagpupursigi.

Para kay Frances Marie Akol, mag-aaral ng Batsyiler ng Sining ng Pagtatanghal (Bachelor of Performing Arts) at tumanggap ng Natatanging Pagbanggit para sa Worlds Championship of Performing Arts (Special Citation Award for Worlds Championship of Performing Arts), nagsimula ang kanyang tagumpay bago pa man siya makatuntong sa pandaigdigang entablado. Sa likod ng pagkilalang iyon ay ang mga pagsasanay at paghahandang kinailangan upang katawanin hindi lamang ang sarili kundi maging ang pamantasang kanyang pinanggalingan.

“Hindi lamang kinilala ang aking pagsisikap, kundi maging ang suporta ng paaralan sa akin na naging malaking tulak upang magpatuloy pa,” ani Akol. Para kay Akol, hindi pansariling pagsisikap lamang ang bumubuo sa isang tagumpay. Kasama rin dito ang mga taong nagbibigay ng lakas at paniniwala habang hinahabol ng isang mag-aaral ang kanyang pangarap.

Samantala, para kay Minchie Gapasinao mula sa Batsyiler ng Sining sa Pag-aaral ng Wikang Ingles (Bachelor of Arts in English Language Studies), ang tagumpay ay may kasamang mga Linggong ginugol sa ensayo, pamasahe patungo sa mga pagsasanay, kakulangan sa tulog, at mga pagkakataong kailangang pagsabayin ang klase at pagiging alagad ng sining. Bilang miyembro ng PUP Bagong Himig Senerata, lumahok si Gapasinao sa Yogyakarta International Choral Festival at tumanggap ng Natatanging Pagbanggit (Special Citation Award) matapos ang matagal na paghahanda kasama ang kanyang mga kasamahan. “Nakakapagod maging mag-aaral na alagad ng sining, pero sa huli, basta gusto mo ang ginagawa mo, may katuparan at saya ito,” ani Gapasinao.

Hindi rin nagtapos sa pansariling tagumpay ang kahulugan ng mga parangal. Sa pagtanggap ng Natatanging Pinuno ng Mag-aaral ng CAL (CAL Outstanding Student Leader Award), binigyang-diin ni Christian Ancheta ang tungkuling gamitin ang kaalaman, talento, at tinig para sa bayan. “Artista ng bayan, patuloy na sumulong, patuloy nating pagsilbihan ang sambayanan,” ani Ancheta. Sa ganitong pananaw, ang pagkilala ay hindi lamang pagtatapos ng isang paglalakbay kundi simula ng panibagong pananagutan—ang gamitin ang mga natutuhan at kakayahan para sa kapwa, pamantasan, at bayan.

Ngunit bago pa man maiabot ang mga medalya, may sarili ring sakripisyong hinarap ang mga taong naglatag ng seremonya. Naantala ang orihinal na iskedyul ng programa dahil sa mga suspensiyong dulot ng bagyo, habang kakaunti rin ang natanggap na nominasyon para sa mga parangal. Wala ring nakalaang pondo para sa pagkilala, kaya ilang pangangailangan ng programa ay tinustusan mula sa sariling ambag ng mga guro.

Sa kabila nito, ipinagpatuloy ng CAL Recognition Committee ang programa upang hindi malampasan ang mga tagumpay ng mga mag-aaral noong Taong Panuruan 2025–2026. “Ayaw naming malampasan ang kanilang mga nakamit noong 2025–2026,” ani Alondra Gayle T. Sulit, tagapangulo ng CAL Recognition Committee 2026.

Bukod sa pagkilala sa kahusayang pang-akademiko, pinarangalan din ang mga natatanging ambag sa pananaliksik, pagsasanay, pamumuno, sining, at mga organisasyon. Kabilang dito ang Natatanging Organisasyon ng Mag-aaral ng CAL (CAL Outstanding Student Organization Award), Natatanging Intern ng CAL (CAL Outstanding Intern Award), Natatanging Tesis ng CAL (CAL Outstanding Thesis Award), Natatanging Alagad ng Sining ng CAL para sa Pagtatanghal Panteatro (CAL Outstanding Student Artist for Theatrical Performance), at Natatanging Pinuno ng Mag-aaral ng CAL (CAL Outstanding Student Leader Award).

Pinayabong naman ng mga pagtatanghal ng PUP Tulos Baybay at ng drag artist na si Edsa Xxtra ang programa, na nagbigay-diin sa mahalagang puwang ng sining at kultura sa buhay ng mga mag-aaral.

Higit sa indibidwal na pagkilala, sinasalamin ng mga pinarangalan ang mga pagpapahalaga ng PUP sa kahusayan, integridad, at paglilingkod. Sa akademya, sining, pananaliksik, at pamumuno, ipinakita nilang maaaring maging daan ang kaalaman at talento upang makapag-ambag sa pamantasan at sa mas malawak na pamayanan.

Kaakibat nito ang mga layunin ng Sustainable Development Goals o Mga Layunin para sa Napapanatiling Kaunlaran, partikular ang SDG 4 o De-kalidad na Edukasyon, sa pagpapaunlad ng kakayahan ng mga mag-aaral; SDG 8 o Disenteng Trabaho at Pag-unlad ng Ekonomiya, sa paghahanda sa kanilang mga larangan; SDG 10 o Pagbawas ng Hindi Pagkakapantay-pantay, sa pagkilala sa sari-saring talento at ambag; at SDG 16 o Kapayapaan, Katarungan, at Matatag na Institusyon, sa pagsusulong ng responsableng pamumuno at pakikilahok sa lipunan.

Sa pagtatapos ng seremonya, higit pa sa medalya at sertipiko ang dala ng mga pinarangalan. Kasama nila ang mga gabing ipinuhunan, pagod na tiniis, pagkakataong ipinagpaliban, at mga taong naging bahagi ng kanilang paglalakbay. Ang Araw ng Pagkilala ay naging paalala na ang bawat tagumpay ay may pinagmulan—may panahong kailangang magtanim, magtiyaga, at maghintay bago anihin ang bunga. At sa pagharap ng mga mag-aaral sa mga susunod na yugto ng kanilang paglalakbay, mananatiling hamon ang gawing higit na makabuluhan ang kanilang mga tagumpay—para sa sarili, sa kapwa, at sa bayan.

Global Rankings and Education Innovation Propel Sintang Paaralan's International Visibility

Sintang Paaralan continues to expand its presence in the global higher education landscape as recent milestones in international university rankings and education recognition programs highlight its growing work in innovation, sustainability, internationalization, and inclusive education.

Among its latest milestones is its debut in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, where the University placed 1,333rd worldwide, 90th in the Philippines, and 807th in Asia.

The UI GreenMetric World University Rankings recognize universities for their commitment to sustainability and environmentally responsible practices, assessing institutional efforts across infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, transportation, water, and education and research.

Sintang Paaralan’s entry into the global sustainability ranking marks another step in advancing initiatives that promote environmental responsibility and sustainable development. These efforts contribute to SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13: Climate Action.

Batch 2026 Steps Into Purpose as PUP Concludes YECE

The University concluded its 2026 Year-End Commencement Exercises (YECE) on September 23, conferring degrees to 3,683 graduates across the Graduate School (GS), Open University System (OUS), and the Institute of Technology (ITECH) at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) Plenary Hall.

Marking the culmination of the University’s three-day return to the PICC stage, the final day celebrated the academic milestones of working professionals, technical scholars, non-traditional learners, and advanced degree holders.

University President Manuel M. Muhi led the University administration, alongside the Executive Committee, members of the Board of Regents, and college deans and officials, in commending the graduating batch for proving that learning transcends age, work demands, and distance.

The concluding rites were elevated by commencement speakers who delivered candid, grounded insights—urging the graduating classes of non-traditional and postgraduate scholars to anchor their careers in discipline, hands-on leadership, and moral clarity.

Addressing the graduates of Cluster 7, Dr. Mariano S. Yupitun, Founder of Universal Wisdom Foundation Inc. & Wisdom Park, emphasized that true success cannot be copied. He challenged the graduates to stay disciplined in their respective enterprises, warning that a lack of focus can quietly drain resources and erode hard-earned money.

“In business, you need to focus. Spending too much time having fun, or failing to be hands-on, will empty your inventory and drain your capital,” he noted, stressing that personal credibility is an enduring professional currency.

Balancing knowledge with wisdom, he led the entire hall in an interactive affirmation of gratitude, directing the candidates to voice their heartfelt thanks to the Nation, their Parents, their Educators, and their Elders. Reminding the assembly that every choice carries consequences, he urged: “As you leave this institution today, aim high—what you sow in preparation, discipline, and effort is what you will reap in character.”

For Cluster 8, Josephine Lee Gothong, President of Axxis Worldwide, LLC & Global LED RGB Technologies LLC, shared a personal narrative about navigating early setbacks, embracing rejection, and staying faithful to one's journey. Recalling her beginnings upon graduating and starting a family with “dreams bigger than bank accounts,” she reflected on the vulnerability of stepping into the unknown.

“Leaving home is never easy. You leave behind uncertainty, and no one promises success,” she shared. “Sometimes God doesn’t show you the whole staircase, just the first step.”

“I learned not to be afraid of rejection, because every ‘no’ brings us closer to a ‘yes.’ Graduates, do not fear failure—fear regret. Never confuse delay with defeat,” she added.

Acknowledging that the diploma represents a shared victory with the families and mentors who supported them, she left the assembly with a lasting reflection:

“Success may provide you with a living, but purpose will provide you with a life. Never allow fear to have the last word.”

For the final cluster, Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito highlighted the transformative power of public education to uplift Filipino families, emphasizing that the government's support for state universities provides long-term value that outlasts any short-term assistance.

“Mas maganda mag-invest tayo sa edukasyon—pang-habangbuhay ‘yan,” he said, underscoring that accessible state education remains the country's most powerful social equalizer.

He lauded the distinct brand of excellence that characterizes PUP graduates in the professional sector:

“Sa PUP sinasabi, ‘utak ang puhunan’—that is why you are the most sought-after graduates in the country.”

Challenging the graduates to embody perseverance and professional ethics, he reminded the hall that true character is measured by how one recovers from adversity and remains steadfast in principle. He stated “Alagaan po natin ang ating integridad.” (Take care of our integrity.)

Beyond the commencement addresses, the graduates themselves embodied the heart of the ceremony, whose presence captured both exceptional academic triumph and the quiet persistence of non-traditional learners.

As the final cluster drew to a close, the plenary floor resonated with the collective commitment that defines the Sintang Paaralan. Rising in unison to sing the Imno ng PUP, the 3,683 new alumni marked the completion of the 2026 Year-End Commencement Exercises with a shared vow to put their knowledge into action.

The University and BAYANIHANPH Web Portal Services Inc. through the Office of Scholarship and Financial Assistance (OSFA) of the University are expanding opportunities for underserved and deserving students through a partnership that harnesses digital crowdfunding to provide educational assistance to qualified PUP scholars.

The two institutions formalized their collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on September 25, 2026, at the Scholarly Lounge, Ground Floor, Claro M. Recto Building, PUP Sta. Mesa Campus, Manila.

The partnership introduces BAYANIHANPH’s “Adopt a Scholar, Donate for the Future” program to the University community, providing a digital crowdfunding platform where benefactors and donors can extend financial support to qualified PUP scholars.

BAYANIHANPH Web Portal Services Inc., whose mission is to make it easier for people to help one another, operates as a crowdfunding platform that connects individuals and organizations with beneficiaries who need support. Through the partnership, the platform will serve as an avenue for donors to contribute to the educational journey of students who face financial challenges.

Representing the University during the MOU signing was Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Prof. Tomas O. Testor, together with Office of Scholarship and Financial Assistance Director Engr. Ana Liza R. Publico. BAYANIHANPH Web Portal Services Inc. was represented by its CEO and President, Mr. Felix Tobillo Jr.

Testor highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for students who may have limited financial resources but remain committed to pursuing their education.

“Let us give hope to our students—the underprivileged but deserving students,” Testor said.

He also emphasized the lasting impact of education as a form of support, noting, “When we give them education, its impact will be long-lasting.”

Through the digital platform, the partnership seeks to widen access to educational assistance by connecting deserving scholars with individuals and organizations willing to help. BS PSYCHOLOGY GRADUATES EXCEL IN 2026 PSYCHOMETRICIANS LICENSURE EXAMINATION

Several graduates of our Sintang Paralan earned top rankings in the 2026 Psychometricians Licensure Examination, posting outstanding scores and contributing to the strong overall performance of PUP campuses.

Three PUP examinees ranked 7th nationwide with a rating of 93%: Jemely Paderes Butron, Sandra Braza Manalo, and Arien Kaye Cervantes Monterona.

Meanwhile, Kayezel Sabas Belen, Carl Danielle Wanta Buenaventura, and Ayanna Marie Ramos Mendoza secured 8th place nationwide, each earning a rating of 92.80 percent.

Trisha Villarta Velasco also placed 10th nationwide with a rating of 92.40 percent.

The University likewise extended its congratulations to the PUP San Juan Campus, PUP Sta. Rosa Campus, PUP Sta. Mesa Campus, and PUP Sto. Tomas Campus for their strong overall performance in the licensure examination.

The achievements reflect the dedication of PUP graduates and the University's commitment to providing quality and accessible education that prepares students for professional practice and service to the nation. Alumna Gives Back, Donates Smart Lectern to Sintang Paaralan

Providers Medical Center ophthalmologist and alumna Dr. Marie Fe “Faye” Salvador-Navarrete has donated a smart lectern device to the Sintang Paaralan to facilitate efficient information dissemination and public use.

During the ceremonial signing of the Deed of Donation held at Alumni Relations and Career Development Office Conference Room (ARCDO) on September 18, Salvador-Navarrete donated the device—a digital podium that integrates a built-in computer, touch-screen monitor, microphone system, and adjustable-height motorized stand into a single unit. It will be used for streamlined presentations during University-related events, such as academic, professional, and institutional activities.

A 1996 BS Economic graduate in 1996, she stated it is her honor to give back to the University that helped “shape her values, her professional journey, and inspired her commitment to contributing to the community.”

“May this smart lectern serve as a valuable resource for learning, innovation, leadership development, and meaningful engagement among students,” she said.

She added that this ceremony serves as a testament to the enduring partnership of PUP and its alumni, expressing hope that this donation will enable a more robust learning environment for generations of Iskolar ng Bayan to come.

ARCDO Director Engr. Florinda H. Oquindo noted that every time alumni gives back to their alma mater, it is “one of the most beautiful expressions of gratitude” and a form of continued service “through meaningful contributions, partnerships, mentorship, and service.”

“Every time this lectern is used, it will remind us of an alumna who chose to give back,” she said. “It will remind our students and our community that wherever our graduates may go and whatever success they achieve, there is always an opportunity to return and help build a better PUP for the next generation.”

University President Dr. Manuel Muhi noted that this event is a manifestation of the alumni to commit to giving back to help the PUP Community, remarking that the drive to “serve the people ay hindi talaga nawawala.” (Serving the people really never fades).

Also present on that day to receive the donation were Vice President for Student Affairs and Services (VPSAS) Prof. Tomas O. Testor, Alumni Relations Services Chief, Dr. Emy Abayan-Perez, and members of ARCDO.

The donated smart lectern reflects a shared commitment to streamlining and digitizing both public and academic services for the entire PUP community. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, highlighting the Sintang Paaralan’s continued collaborations with its alumni.

Graduates Mark 2026 YECE by Honoring the Journeys Behind Their Success

The second day of the 2026 Year-End Commencement Exercises (YECE) was a celebration of degrees earned, but also a reflection of the struggles and circumstances that made these achievements possible.

Held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on September 22, 2026, the event comprised 3,923 graduates, comprising students from the College of Communication (COC), College of Social Sciences and Development (CSSD), College of Political Science and Public Administration (CPSPA), College of Tourism, Hospitality, and Transportation Management (CTHTM) and College of Science (CS), College of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS), College of Education (COED), and the Post Baccalaureate program of the COED.

The ceremonies brought together families and members of the PUP Community as they witnessed the graduates formally receive the degrees they had worked toward.

Yet throughout the day's addresses, graduation was framed as more than the recognition of individual achievement. Behind every diploma were people who helped carry its weight, circumstances that shaped the student's paths, and a responsibility to make the education received matter beyond the University.

Beyond the Diploma: Looking towards the future possibilities

Former PUP Vice President Pascualito B. Gatan urged graduates to see their diploma not as an end, but as a promise to carry discipline, perseverance, humility, gratitude, and integrity forward.

As they step into an uncertain future, San Juan City Mayor Francisco Javier “Francis” Zamora encouraged them to be open and ready for every possible opportunity. Yet beneath that call lies a shared struggle: for graduates who have navigated financial pressures, uncertainty, and a system that does not always meet their aspirations, dreaming itself can be difficult.

Tingog Party-list Representative and House Committee on Higher and Technical Education Chairperson Rep. Jude Acidre captured this notion, saying “Mabigat mangarap kung paulit-ulit ka nang binibigo ng sistema.” (“It is difficult to dream when the system repeatedly fails you.”)

Different circumstances, same objective

That struggle resonated in the valedictory addresses, as the top graduates reflected on the people, hardships, and perseverance behind their degrees.

Shealla Lyn Erese Cabagay, a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bachelor of Science in Psychology, reflected on the different circumstances that shaped each graduate’s journey. While they stood on the same stage, she reminded them, “We did not take the same road to get here.”

Standing before the graduates, she said that their degrees are not only proof of what they achieved.

Juan Christian Bertos Haruhara, a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bachelor of Science in Biology–Microbiology Track, focused on the people who became part of their journey. Drawing from the film ‘Ekstra’, he reminded graduates that being an “extra” in someone else’s life does not make their presence insignificant.

He said “Kahit bida tayo sa sarili nating buhay. Extra tayo sa buhay ng bawat isa. At hindi na rin masama because being an extra does not mean being insignificant.”

(“Even though we are the protagonists in our own lives, we are extras in the lives of others—and being an extra does not mean being insignificant”).

Meanwhile, Rogie Amador Colo, a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino, looked back on the struggles that shaped their college years.

Recalling the experience of searching for spare coins when money was tight, he said, “Ang barya ay hindi lang maliit na halaga. Ito ay simbolo ng ating determinasyon na pumasok at lumaban sa kabila ng kakulangan.” (“The coin is not just a small amount. It is a symbol of our determination to attend school and keep fighting despite our struggles”).

Their messages reflected the various paths that brought the graduates to the same stage. As they celebrate this achievement, they are also preparing to carry out these lessons beyond PUP: into new professions, communities, and the next phase of their lives.

As the graduates begin their next chapter, they carry out the University's INSPIRED Core Values as a foundation for contributing to their professions, communities, and the nation. Their journeys also reflect PUP's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education, SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 10 on Reduced Inequalities, and SDG 16 on Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, through accessible education, professional development, inclusive opportunities, and service to society.

Leaving the University and embarking on a new chapter of their lives, they carry with them more than their degrees. They bring the stories of the people who supported them, the challenges they overcame, and the lessons that shaped them as PUPians.

From the classroom to the wider community, their next steps will put their knowledge and values into action. They marched for their degrees; they now step forward into new chapters, ready to build, lead, innovate, and serve with purpose, carrying them the responsibility to use their education for the nation.

The second day of YECE offered different ways of understanding what it means to graduate from PUP. There was the discipline to endure, the support to persist, and the responsibility that follows achievement. The degrees conferred at the PICC may belong to individual graduates, but the stories behind them rarely do.

They are stories of families and teachers, of public investment and personal sacrifice, of opportunities received and responsibilities inherited. And as the graduates move into their professions and communities, the significance of their education will ultimately be found not only in where it takes them, but in what they choose to do with what they have been given.

Sintang Paaralan Returns to PICC, Marking a New Chapter of Service to the Nation

Sintang Paaralan returned to the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) on September 21, marking a memorable opening to the 2026 Year-End Commencement Exercises (YECE) and bringing together thousands of graduates, families, University officials, faculty members, and guests to celebrate years of perseverance, achievement, and service.

Following the renovation of the PICC, the University once again held its commencement exercises at the iconic venue, where 3,915 graduates from the PUP Sta. Mesa Campus marched in three clusters from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Cluster 1 featured the College of Business Administration (CBA) and the College of the Arts and Letters (CAL); Cluster 2 brought together the College of Human Kinetics (CHK), College of Accountancy and Finance (CAF), and PUP Parañaque Campus; while Cluster 3 featured the College of Engineering (CE) and the College of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment (CADBE).

University President Manuel M. Muhi, together with Vice President for Research and Extension and Development Anna Ruby P. Gapasin, Vice President for Campuses Armando A. Torres, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services Tomas O. Testor, and Vice President for Administration Adam V. Ramilio, joined the University's deans, faculty members, parents, families, and guests in witnessing the graduates take this significant step toward their professional and civic journeys.

Adding distinction to the ceremonies were three commencement speakers who challenged the graduates to turn their education into meaningful action. Consul Enunina V. Mangio, who was conferred the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, Honoris Causa, reminded Cluster 1 graduates that meaningful change does not always require transforming an entire country, but begins with consistently doing one’s part wherever one is. For Cluster 2, Department of Finance Secretary Frederick D. Go, conferred the degree of Doctor of Economics, Honoris Causa, underscored the enduring value of integrity and the importance of earning and protecting the public’s trust. Meanwhile, Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Vivencio “Vince” B. Dizon, recipient of the Tanglaw ng Bayan Award, urged Cluster 3 graduates to recognize their power to make a difference, use their voices, and help shape the country’s future as the hope on which the nation relies.

Yet beyond the ceremony, Day 1 became a gathering of stories that gave deeper meaning to the graduates' achievements.

Among the graduates who embodied the journey of an Iskolar ng Bayan was Shylen Mae N. Escarpe, a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bachelor of Physical Education, who described graduating from PUP as a testament to the “hardship and resiliency of being an Iskolar ng Bayan.”

Her PUP journey taught her to step beyond her comfort zone, embrace opportunities, and face failure without fear. As a future physical educator, she plans to promote active and healthy lifestyles by encouraging her future students to participate in sports and regular physical activities.

“As a physical educator, I want to contribute to promoting an active and healthy lifestyle by encouraging people, especially my future students, to participate in sports and regular physical activities,” Escarpe said.

Her mother, Lora N. Escarpe, likewise expressed gratitude to PUP for helping shape her daughter through years of challenges and sacrifice.

“Nagpapasalamat kami sa buong pamunuan ng PUP dahil naka-graduate ang anak namin bilang isang Iskolar ng Bayan. Masayang-masaya kami dahil nakita namin kung paano hinubog ng PUP ang aming anak. Mula sa pagiging matatakuting harapin ang mga pagsubok, ngayon nakakayanan na niyang makipagsapalaran sa Maynila.” Lora shared.

(We are grateful to the entire PUP administration because our daughter graduated as an Iskolar ng Bayan. We are very happy to have witnessed how PUP shaped our daughter. From being afraid to face challenges, she can now confidently take on the challenges of living and pursuing opportunities in Manila.)

For Lora, the journey was shared by the entire family from working to provide for her daughter's needs to enduring the distance while Shylen lived in Manila. She now hopes that her daughter will extend the same transformative influence to the youth.

“Katulad ng paghubog ng PUP sa kanya, sana maging daan din siya upang hubugin ang mga kabataan lalo na sa panahon ngayon na maraming kabataan ang naliligaw ng landas,” she added.

(Just as PUP helped shape her, I hope that she, too, will become an instrument in shaping the youth, especially at a time when many young people are losing their way.)

While Shylen's story reflected the triumph of a graduate and the sacrifices of a family, another moment reminded the PUP community that graduation can also carry profound emotions of love and remembrance.

Rejie Dayun marched in place of his daughter, Catherine Claire Dayun, a Bachelor of Business Administration major in Human Resources graduate who passed away on August 29, 2026, weeks before her graduation. Carrying Catherine's graduation photograph, Rejie walked across the PICC stage to represent his daughter and fulfill the milestone she had worked toward for years.

“Sana masaya sa pinuntahan mo, kasi pinaghirapan mo 'to ng ilang taon. Kahit ako, hindi ko matanggap ang nangyari sa kanya, pero proud na proud ako sa kanya.” Rejie shared.

(I hope you are happy wherever you are now, because you worked hard for this for several years. Even I still cannot accept what happened to her, but I am very, very proud of her.)

His quiet march became a poignant reminder that behind every graduate stands a family whose sacrifices, support, and dreams are part of the journey toward a diploma.

Beyond the celebration of academic milestones, the commencement also provided a space for students to reflect on the country's history and their responsibilities as citizens. As the nation marked the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines, students raised their voices in remembrance, chanting “NEVER AGAIN! NEVER AGAIN!” and carrying the message “SERVE THE PEOPLE.”

The moment underscored the role of the Iskolar ng Bayan not only as graduates, but as citizens called to remember history, uphold democratic values, participate meaningfully in society, and put knowledge into action for the Filipino people.

As the graduates begin their next chapter, they carry with them the University's INSPIRED Core Values as their foundation for meaningful contributions to their professions, communities, and the nation. Bisig Vol. 6 Special Issue on Justice and Lasting Peace Highlights Research on Philippine Peacebuilding

In observance of National Peace Consciousness Month 2026, the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) revisits Bisig, Vol. 6 (2024), Special Issue on Justice and Lasting Peace (Natatanging Isyu sa Pangmatagalang Kapayapaang Nakabatay sa Katarungan), which brings together scholarly perspectives on justice, peacebuilding, and the social and political conditions shaping the pursuit of lasting peace in the Philippines.

Produced through the collaboration of the Research and Publication Office (RPO), Center for Peace, Social Justice, and Human Rights Studies (CPSJHRS), and Center for Labor and Industrial Relations Studies (CLIRS), in partnership with Scholars for Peace, the special issue features research articles, commentary, a book review, and an interview examining the challenges and possibilities of achieving just and lasting peace.

Among the featured contributions is Angelo Vince S. Marfil’s “Praxis ng Rebeldeng Pamamahala ng Kilusang Pambanda-Demokratiko at Posibilidad ng Muling Pagbubukas ng Usapang Pangkapayapaan,” which examines the limited scholarship on revolutionary governance in the Philippines and explores the possibility of reopening peace negotiations toward the resolution of armed conflict.

Meanwhile, Gary F. Musa and Ana Dominique G. Santos analyze the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) between the Philippines and the United States in their article, “EDCA as the Geopolitics of Imperialist Crises and Its Threat to Peace in the Philippines.” Drawing on the theories of capitalist crisis and imperialism, the authors examine the agreement’s geopolitical implications, including its relationship to Philippine national autonomy and the pursuit of just and lasting peace.

The special issue also features Dr. Sol Iglesias’s commentary, “A Just and Sustainable Peace in the Philippines,” which identifies key requirements for a just and sustainable peace process, including a ceasefire, respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL), protection of negotiators, confidence-building measures, disarmament and demobilization, and addressing spoilers to the peace process.

In her book review, “The Singing Detainee and the Librarian with One Book: Essays on Exile (2023) by Michael Beltran,” Dr. Mary Grace Concepcion examines how Beltran’s first-person narrative portrays the experiences of revolutionaries Jose Maria Sison and Julieta de Lima in exile, while highlighting the complex dimensions of revolutionary struggle.

The publication concludes with an interview with Rey Claro Casambre conducted by Scholars for Peace. The interview presents Casambre’s perspectives as a peace consultant involved in peace negotiations between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP), as well as his views on the role of education in advancing just and lasting peace.

The issue also includes a preface by Dr. Michael D. Pante and a message from Chief Rimando E. Felicia of CLIRS, who served as Guest Editor and Editor-in-Chief, respectively, of the Bisig Journal. Their contributions emphasize the view that the foundation of peace rests not only on justice but also on the elimination of oppression and exploitation.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, the special issue underscores the importance of justice, inclusive dialogue, and critical scholarship in advancing peaceful and equitable societies. It also contributes to broader discussions on SDG 4 (Quality Education) through its emphasis on education and research as instruments for social transformation

Through the publication, PUP emphasizes the role of research and scholarly discourse in critically examining Philippine society and contributing to discussions on just and lasting peace. The special issue reflects the University's commitment to freedom of expression, critical inquiry, and social responsibility, in keeping with its guiding principle, Mula sa Iyo, Para sa Bayan.
