In addition to generating its own alcohol with virgin coconut oil, it is now fabricating an Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection Conveyor Machine to help in the fight to contain the virus.

The project was initiated by the Office of the Vice President for Research, Planning, and Development (OVPREPD) in collaboration with the Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO). The UV disinfection machines were developed specifically to sterilize documents. These machines will be distributed to offices that consume and use significant amount of paper.

“We plan to distribute the machines to crowded areas [in the university], like the accounting office, registrar’s office, and those areas that are receiving a lot of documents. Kasi madami pa ding opisina na gumagamit ng maraming papel at hindi pa naman tayo paperless. The main beneficiary of project is the PUP community [sic]” said Engr. Ginno Andres, project head and IPMO director.

The idea for disinfectant machines came from a thesis paper written by mechanical engineering students who maximized the use of ultraviolet rays as disinfectants. The IPMO, with the assistance of its engineers and technical experts, built on this concept and designed machines to benefit the university. Engr. Andres said that the machines are user-friendly: each one comes with a manual to guide users through the settings.

“Our mechanical engineering students kumbaga naboost ang kanilang morale with these innovations. Sila talaga ang nagfabricate nito; but my team, my engineers, and technical experts—Engr. Mark Manlapaz, and Engr. Helarch Anthony, were the ones who designed the machines.” said Engr. Andres.

A total of 100,000.00 pesos served as the seed fund to design the machines. Currently, IPMO has produced seven units as a baseline for the project. The IPMO also plans to commercialize and mass produce the machines after more specifications are developed to make the machines more effective. A turn-over ceremony will also take place in the coming months to formally transfer ownership of the machines to the PUP Community.

View this article in PUPWebSite Mon, 20 Jun 2022 17:28:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=aVjQS%2fks4Fw%3d CROS spearheads wellness activity in Cabiao Gary Musa, News, Extension Management Office

Over 100 beneficiaries from two barangays in Cabiao, Nueva Ecija joined and benefitted from the wellness activity organized by the PUP Extension Management Office last June 7-8. The results were published on the official site of the Commission last June 1.

Support as the backbone of success

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic left an impact on the lives of all Filipinos, including Cruz. The uncertainty of the CPALE schedule as well as the new normal for all conduct of licensure examinations was one of Cruz’s significant challenges during her preparations.

“My biggest struggle is reviewing during this pandemic with so much uncertainty. Hindi ko po kasi alam if ’yung pinaghahandaan ko is matutuloy ba or maca-cancel na naman?” Cruz expressed as she recalled the setbacks she faced due to the pandemic.

“Ang hirap po kasi, parang instead na nag-aral ako, sana nagtrabaho na lang po ako. Parang pakiramdam ko po, ang daming oras, pera at efforts ang nasasayang kung hindi na naman matutuloy ang CPALE. Pero thanks be to God po at nakaraos din po ako sa ganitong sitwasyon,” she added.

The motivation and endless support she gained from her family helped her withstand all the challenges. Additionally, it was the admiration that she felt for her professors and reviewers that propelled her resolve to do well in the examination.

It was also the excellence and passion of their instructors to aid her and her fellow students that became her inspiration and the backbone of her success in becoming a top-notch CPA.

Journey to the top

As a PUPian who earned her degree in Accountancy in May 2019, Cruz did not expect to not only pass the CPALE but also to place among the top ten successful examinees. She was elated by the event and burst into tears of joy with her family as all of her doubts about failing the exam receded.

“I can’t contain my happiness. Pinuntahan ko po agad ang sister ko tapos umiyak ako [nang] umiyak sa sobrang saya! Hindi ko po talaga ineexpect. Sa totoo lang po, akala ko po talaga nung una ay babagsak ako dahil sobrang nahirapan po ako sa isang subject namin. Sobrang worried po ako dahil sa subject na yun,” she shared.

She also spoke about her experiences as she prepared for the exam. Cruz stated that she could not afford to fall sick during those times. She emphasized the importance of having a conditioned body and mind in order to be efficient and productive.

Cruz plans to further enhance her professional skills in auditing after bagging her license. She is presently working as an audit associate in an auditing firm.

A tip for aspiring CPAs

As a fellow Iskolar ng Bayan, Cruz encouraged other students who aspire to become a CPA. She highlighted that it is a benefit for life that one may attain from acquiring the title of CPA after all the sacrifices and hard work exerted for it.

“Make sure to condition your mind and body all throughout your preparation for the exam. It is almost certain that you will encounter other challenges and temptations that will waste your time during your review so you have to prepare yourself for that,” she advised.

“The preparation will only last for 5-6 months but it will benefit you for your entire life. Kaya give your all na during the preparation and talagang there will be sacrifices. If it’s God’s will, ibibigay nya sa inyo ang title na CPA. Fighting!”

Photo source: Maglipon, Kristian Denise (2022, June 2). With their increasing importance in the field of archiving, there is a need to broaden and strengthen the application of these digital tools in order to make them more generally available and effective.

Towards this end, the Philippine Documentary Heritage held a two-day webinar series on Digital Archiving in celebration of the National Heritage Month with the theme, “Digital Technology and Documentary Heritage,” last May 20 and 27.

A discussion from Assistant Professor Paul Jason Perez from the University of the Philippines, Diliman was featured on May 20. He stressed the ramifications of our growing reliance on digital technology and how we might deal with it by expanding awareness on the ethics of digital archiving, particularly web-archiving. He explained that websites and social media have become prominent media for archiving information.

With the rise of social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, archivists must also focus on providing voices to groups in need of representation. He also emphasized the importance of Philippine institutions and communities becoming mission-centered in their web-archive curation.

“Web-archiving is no longer viewed as something that can be done separately; this should be in collaboration with the community you are archiving, communities that need to be heard, their stories and truths are likewise valid, and we must preserve their voices [sic],” Perez said.

The second offering of the Digital Technology and Documentary Heritage series explored the possibilities of the archive and archival work in the artistic and personal practice of a transdisciplinary artist and researcher.

On May 27, insights on some of the tools, methods, learning resources, and even examples of archiving as a mode of thinking and doing were discussed. Dr. Diego S. Maranan, dean of the Faculty of Information and Communication Studies at the University of the Philippines Open University talked about “Archiving as Artistic and Personal Practice: Tools, Methods, Examples, and Learning Resources.”

Dr. Maranan discussed his works, as a transdisciplinary artist and researcher. These range from investigating how digital technologies are changing the way humans move and perceive human movement to co-creating socially engaged art installations that foster symbiotic relationships between plants, computers, and people. He encouraged everyone to get involved in the field of archiving as everyone can play an active role in preserving our cultural and historical heritage.

“Archiving is something all of us can do, not just professional librarians and archivists although their support is something very important in order to create useful, complete and usable archives,” Dr. Maranan quipped.

In his closing remarks for the webinar series, Arnulfo Junio, Head of the National Committee on Archives at the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, invited all cultural professionals and artists to participate on the various 2023 NCCA competitions and activities.

The webinar is part of PHDH, an ongoing collaborative research project between the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. It is a valuable effort towards “collecting, preserving, and giving access to creative works, accounts, and manifestations of experiences of the arts and culture sector” during the pandemic. It offers a unique way to “inform researchers, academics, scientists, policymakers, and other stakeholders about the extent and diverse ways the pandemic impacted the sector.” To learn more about the project, you may visit and like their Facebook Page.

View this article in PUPWebSite Wed, 08 Jun 2022 15:40:00 GMT http://www.pup.edu.ph/news/?go=EB05IckQ52w%3d BSA students triumph in EXCEED 2022 Kryztal Mae Pasco, News, College of Accountancy and Finance

A group of BS in Accountancy students bagged the championship in the finals round of the EXCEED Business Case Competition, held last May 28, 2022, with the theme “Recalibrating the Norm: Augmenting Integrity and Business Synergy.”

The champion team from PUP Manila, Team Tanglaw, battled the elimination, semi-finals, and finals to become the next business case champions.
